First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the Omicron variant was spreading “rapidly” and now accounts for 80% of all cases.

She said further “steep increases” in infections are expected in the coming days and weeks.

I’m getting right royally sick of hearing/reading/seeing all these Covid numbers several times a day, every day.

I read an article in last Sunday’s Mail on Sunday written by Sir Graham Brady MP (Chair of the 1922 Committee) that summed it all up for me - part of the article I’ll now quote verbatim:

"Context is all too rare. Weekly figures published just a fortnight ago show a total of 661 deaths from Covid in England and Wales, for example. That is a sad picture. But why is Covid the only cause of death reported when 112,269 people died of other things in the same week?

The article continues in much the same vein.

When you do the sums (I’ll do them for you) you will find that the number of Covid-related deaths are just a few % of the total. That’s nothing at all to worry your little cotton socks over.

11,269 + 661 = 11,930 total deaths
(661/11930) * 100 = 5.54%

Cancer deaths (England and Wales, 2020, ONS figures)
147,193/yr = 2830.6/week on average (over 4 times greater than death by Covid!)

Because of a delay in receiving deaths data for England, today’s update is delayed. The current estimate for release is 8:30pm.

Deaths are not the only cause for concern - to consider them to be so is to take the blinkered view.

I do know that Omah, but it’s not just this forum, it’s the TV, radio, MSM in general. Are you suggesting I stop watching/listening/reading everything just because there might be something Covid related content?

No … your choice of media is beyond my control.

This forum does offer you filter options which is more than “the TV, radio, MSM in general”.

@Percy_Vere … I reckon daily stats will soon become a thing of the past Percy.
If the government want/need people to get back to ‘normal’ they’ll quietly bury them once they hit a downward trend and then stick to once a week instead.

Hooray to that happening.

“Soon” may not be anytime in the near future.

No … but if they keep running out of PCR and LFT the numbers will become a bit meaningless.

Unfortunate turn of phrase there, Morty :joy:

We aren’t seeing a great increase in deaths. Proportionately we are seeing far fewer.

Would you like to see more … :017:

The big numbers of infections are a smokescreen panic circus, when it’s clearly not leading to severe illness for the majority.
