Currently, around one in 50 people across the UK is infected and Prof Whitty told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “There’s a very high chance that if you meet someone unnecessarily they will have Covid.”

In a separate interview with BBC One’s Breakfast, he said: “This is everybody’s problem. Any single unnecessary contact you have with someone is a potential link in a chain of transmission that will lead to a vulnerable person.”

No use telling the young people of today that … they won’t believe you … :009:

Health Secretary Matt Hancock leading No 10 briefing

Laura Bundock from Sky News asks if it was complacent for the prime minister to allow mixing indoors over Christmas - and if we are paying the price now.

Apparently, Hancock ignores the question and, instead:

Matt Hancock says what we’re seeing is that “the new variant of the virus is incredibly transmissible” and is “highly contagious”. The fact it spreads so easily means we have an “incredibly difficult few weeks ahead of us”. It is imperative everybody follows the rules - and doesn’t see them as a limit to be stretched.

“I know that’s difficult but it’s so important for everybody,” he says. The health secretary stresses the importance of the public following the restrictions of the current lockdown.

Asked by Emily Morgan of ITV whether it was time to make the rules stricter amid reports of people not sticking to them at the weekend, Matt Hancock says: "We keep these things under review and we have demonstrated that we’re willing to tighten the rules if they need to be tightened.

“But the thing that really matters right here, right now is that everybody follows the rules as they are today. And everybody can play their part in doing that.”

Hancock has applauded the police for arresting two female walkers in Debyshire:

Derbyshire Police handed out £200 fines to two women who drove separately to go for a walk at a remote beauty spot

while, along with the rest of the government, totally ignoring:

‘Patience wearing thin’ with football after continued breaches of rules and protocols

Frankly, I expected something more informative and less hypocritical and confusing from Hancock … :069:

Coronavirus (COVID-19) roundup (extract)

The percentage of people testing positive in England has continued to increase in the most recent week

8 January 2021

An estimated 1 in 50 people tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) within the community population in England, during the week from 27 December to 2 January 2021, equating to 1,122,000 people, or 2.06% of the population.

The proportion of those testing positive in Wales has recently decreased, where an estimated 1 in 70 had the virus, which equates to 44,100, or 1.45% of the population in Wales.

In Northern Ireland the proportion of people testing positive appears to no longer be decreasing in the most recent week. An estimated 9,100 people had COVID-19, equating to 1 in 200 people or 0.50% of the population.

In Scotland, the percentage testing positive has increased in the most recent week to around 1 in 115 people in the period 27 to 31 December 2020 (because of additional public holidays), equating to an estimated 45,900 people, or 0.87% of the population of Scotland.

During the week from 27 December to 2 January 2021, London had the highest proportion of people testing positive with an estimated 3.56%, equating to around 1 in 30 people.

Covid-19: Vaccination rollout begins for over-70s in England

People in England aged 70 and over, as well as those listed as clinically extremely vulnerable, will begin receiving offers of a coronavirus vaccine this week.

The expansion of the vaccination programme to the third and fourth priority groups comes after the number of people to receive a first dose rose to 3.8 million across the UK - more than have tested positive (3.4 million) since the pandemic began.

UK deaths more than 40% above normal levels

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-55715793

The number of people who have died with Covid is now close to 96,000, according to an analysis of death certificates.

The figures come after a further 6,586 deaths involving Covid were registered in the UK in the week to 8 January.

The data from the Office for National Statistics - which looks at England and Wales - and its counterparts in Scotland and Northern Ireland is different from the daily totals given by the government, which look at deaths within 28 days of a positive test. Those figures show that up until Monday there had been nearly 90,000 deaths.

Overall, the total number of deaths reported are more than 40% above what is expected at this time of year, although delays registering deaths over the festive period are thought to have contributed to some of the rise.
