Good that will stop her popping in again now if they could just take a few others with her I wouldn’t complain. Liz, Sophie and Dev would do to start, I have a bigger list if they are interested
It broke my heart tonight to see Roy having to carry Hayley back to bed.
I say this with sadness, but we wouldn’t allow a beloved pet to suffer so they are euthanised to put them out of their misery and yet, as humans, we allow our own kind to suffer excrutiating pain, knowing that they’re dying in pain and nothing can be done for them except to keep them dosed up on morphine, until they die anyway. That’s just not right on so many levels.
There’s no right or wrong, but this very sad situation was shown in Holby City a few years ago, when a surgeon reluctantly took his wife to Switzerland because she wanted to end her own misery, legally. It was very traumatic to watch. Not for her, as it’s what she wanted, but for him.
Julie Hesmondhalgh has purposely lost weight in order to give credence to her character and yes, I think the writers and producers are portraying this with dignity and sensitivity, as are the other characters involved.
In this mornings paper it says they are half expecting Hayley’s demise to cause a “wave of copycat suicides”.
Would gullible people really do that do you think?
If people panic enough after watching it Mups, some of them might. Given that manufacturers believe that people will buy after watching an advert, it may also be true that if someone thinks that Hayley is doing the right thing, they may copy if they are in a similar situation?
Gosh it took me 2 hours to watch last nights episodes today I had to keep stopping to recover from crying. My husband went to the shops earlier and returned with two boxes of tissues for Mondays and a grin on his face (grrr)
Eh? So, you’re advocating that two human beings both be shot and murdered for no other reason that you don’t like them, with a high powered rifle in order to penetrate the depths of two bodies taking out blood, bone, tissue and vital organs? Hmmm. Who would commit such a heinous crime, one wonders. Seriously, would you? There are a few folk I don’t like, but I wouldn’t want to murder them.
Replying to Mups:
I’m not sure that it follows that people buy things just because they’ve seen things advertised on telly. I don’t because I’m not so gullible, so I can’t imagine why people would choose the same path as Hayley, just because they’ve seen it on telly. I think perhaps that idea is assuming that all sufferers are the same, and that they all have the same choices, weaknesses or strengths, whichever way it is perceived. No, her choice will not lead to mass suicide which is being suggested, not at all. Having said that, it would be my choice in that situation, and that’s got nothing to do with a soap.
Mollie, Plenty of people I’d have no conscience about bumping off or seeing someone else bump off for me. Maybe not actual soap characters though! After all, wouldn’t want to get blood on the cobbles would we?
Mollie this is a soap a bit of fun and occasionally serious storylines. I would wipe out most of the cast and start again with decent actors if I could write a couple of episodes. Doesn’t make me or anyone else a murderer
And no I wouldn’t use a rifle much too gory for that time of the evening a slow acting poison would be far better let 'em suffer like they make us suffer with their bad acting all these years
And if you could find any decent actors that would want to participate, Julie they are about to kill off the last remaining one - and she really deserves an Oscar.
It always amuses me when the media refer to people like William Roach/Adam Woodyat etc., as ‘stars’ - not in my book - they are just one trick ponies.
Would you really push a wheelchair down the middle of a cobbled street with someone in it who suffers pain? all those jolts. More realistic on a smooth footpath
Yes I said to my husband that made a good shot for the camera but I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the wheelchair if I was in pain. So looks like art got in the way of what would be normal behaviour there.
Well firstly Mollie, advertising must pay, else they wouldn’t do it.
Secondly, they weren’t my personal words re copycat suicides, I quoted what it said in the paper and then asked if people thought this could happen.
I do not know enough people in Hayley’s situation to judge how the scenes may affect them, though I do suspect my Mum has the sort of mind to be influenced. Just as well she doesn’t watch it.
Personally I think people can be influenced by many stories I am not sure that’s a reason not to show them, I get unhappy when young people feel they must have sex from a young age with several partners because soaps and films make it seem normal, but less so with euthanasia. As I believe anyone actually considering euthanasia probably had it in mind before they watched just like young people have sex on their minds. So it’s lesser of the evils they can be shown in my opinion. Of course others may think sex the lesser evil.
