Coronavirus

A young man of 36 with no pre-existing health problems has died.

Oh, my. I didn’t know that. Well, so much for my “gut feeling”. Geez, I guess no one is safe.:frowning:

The doctor who died wasn’t old either. His wife is expecting a baby.

The flu pandemic of 1918 killed mostly young people (admittedly a lot were compromised by war) however I read somewhere that it is felt that old(er) people might have gained some immunity because of a flu outbreak in the 1880s (can’t recall exact date/decade) which had a similar virus.

Coronavirus deaths exceed Sars fatalities in 2003

The number of coronavirus deaths has overtaken that of the Sars epidemic in 2003.

In China’s Hubei province alone, the epicentre of the latest outbreak, the death toll now is put at 780 by regional health officials.

All but one of the overall total of 803 deaths have so far been in mainland China and Hong Kong.

In 2003, 774 people were killed by Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome) in more than two dozen countries.

Worldometer latest:

Coronavirus Cases: 37,155 of which 6,109 in severe condition

Deaths: 806

Recovered: 2,634

Just watched news film of Chinese police, in full bio-hazard suits, dragging, yes literally dragging, people into a quarantine facility. The people were kicking and screaming and hanging onto anything within reach. Precisely what would be expected from such a totalitarian communist regime. Frightening !

Australians who were stranded in the coronavirus epicentre of Wuhan in China have arrived in Darwin.

Their flight touched down at Darwin’s RAAF base shortly before midday local time.

The Australian Border Force said there were 266 evacuees on the flight, including 77 children and 11 infants.

There were also eight students from the Pacific Islands who were allowed to board the flight and land in Darwin on humanitarian grounds, Border Force said.

The landing came just hours after the coronavirus death toll in mainland China rose to 811, surpassing the number of fatalities in the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak.

The evacuees were subject to rigorous screening for the virus throughout their journey, with tests conducted before take-off and twice during the flight.

Having arrived in Darwin, they are expected to be tested again before being transferred to an unused workers’ camp where they will be quarantined for 14 days.

They are expected to be tested again once they enter the quarantine facility.

Hi

An effective way of controlling the spread.

If a full emergency is declared in the USA, the response would be the same.

The second plane carrying evacuees landed at Brize Norton early today .http://https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/09/coronavirus-global-death-toll-overtakes-sars-epidemic

Found this:

Mups what did you make of that ?
Are people afraid if they go into quarantine they won’t come out ?

Has anyone taken a look at our own governments information site.

Does this sound as mad to you as it did to me?

Taking children to school
We recommend that you stay at home for 14 days after arriving from Wuhan or Hubei Province (or elsewhere in China if you have symptoms), and avoid public places. Where possible, contact a friend or family member to take your children to school.

The one thing about the above which strikes me as a tad odd is that I would think that parents should 1st protect their own children. How to do that ? Well, if at all possible have a close relative or a very trusted friend pick up your children BEFORE you come home from China.

I realize that is emotionally difficult but IMO protection of your children comes before all else.

Well it could look like that, I agree, but we don’t know do we.

Maybe the family had things (pets?) they didn’t want to leave behind on their own? Or ageing relatives?
Perhaps the man was scared of losing his job even, if he didn’t show up to work?

Could be anything I suppose, but it sure looked grim, as if they were being taken down stairs or underground.

Yes, I think that is likely. No telling what people in China have heard about the virus. they may be acting out of pure un-reasoning emotions. :frowning:

Certainly does . You just wouldn’t send them to school would you?

Ah , now ,wasn’t the chief honcho threatening the other day ,anyone who refused to go into quarantine would be put in prison ? The men in white suits handling the family were police wern’t they?

They were discussing this on the radio yesterday. Apparently an at risk child should self isolate but the parents living in the same house can have contact and go about their normal lives until their child shows symptoms, once that happens they should all self isolate.

Apparently the fact that this can be spread before symptoms are evident is fake news.

However, the above does not make sense to me either.

The whole list of recommendations on that site is bound to confuse rather than clarify.

I don’t know why they don’t just set up a phone line where anyone in doubt , who returned from abroad, can ring up for advice.

Have never read anything so bloody stupid
