Coronavirus

Oh I see, I misunderstood.

According to the news this evening Australia has had a good day with only 8 new cases countrywide (6 in NSW). Several states had no new cases (SA, WA and QLD). They are now talking about eliminating the virus in Australia though that was not the intention of the lockdown (that was the intention in NZ). However this requires the borders remaining closed for a long period.

This doesn’t include 19 new cases on board Ruby Princess currently berthed in Port Kembla Harbour and the biggest single source of infections in this country. Unless they become seriously ill crew members will not be allowed to enter the country hence the reason for not counting them.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced New Zealand will start to wind back its coronavirus restrictions a week from today.

In a press conference this afternoon, Ms Ardern said the country would stay at alert level four — the highest restriction — for another week before easing to level three for two weeks from 11:59pm on Monday, April 27.

Perhaps I should add that, despite the Covid restrictions, their priest did come to the hospital to give her husband the last rites (they’re Catlicks).

I don’t know.

Australia’s lockdown started on 22nd March when the federal government was pushed by the states, particularly NSW and Victoria, into closing pubs, clubs and restaurants and non essential workplaces.

From memory the UK lockdown started about the same time maybe a few days later.

These were the figures I posted on that day (22nd March)

Things have changed quite a bit since then.

My friend and her husband took early retirement about 5 years ago and they moved to Skegness seaside. They were so happy.

A cpuple of weeks ago john, my friends husband was taken into hospital suffering gall stones. While in hospital he was tested for covid-19 and tested negative. He came home from hospital and became ill. He was tested again and tested positive this time. On saturday he became seriously ill. This morning my friend said he had died in rhe early hours of this morning.

My poor friend is, devastated. His children, grandchildren and all the family are beside themselves, it happened so quickly.

Rip John,

So sorry to read about your friend LQ.

I have recently received this, a compilation of precautions that should be taken under the present circumstances. Individually they make some sense, being taken from different sources, but when put together they are certainly contradictory!

Daily updates so far. Clear concise advice.

 1. You MUST NOT leave the house for any reason, but if you have a reason, you can leave the house.

 2. Masks are useless at protecting you against the virus, but you may have to wear one because it can save lives, but they may not work, but they may be mandatory, but maybe not.

 3. Shops are closed, except those shops that are open.

 4. You must not go to work but you can get another job and go to work.

 5. You should not go to the Doctor’s or to the hospital unless you have to go there, unless you are too poorly to go there.

 6. This virus can kill people, but don’t be scared of it. It can only kill those people who are vulnerable or those people who are not vulnerable. It’s possible to contain and control it, sometimes, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.

 7. Gloves won’t help, but they can still help so wear them sometimes, or not.

 8. STAY HOME, but it’s important to go out.

 9. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarkets, but there are many things missing. Sometimes you won’t need loo rolls but you should buy some just in case you need some.

 10. The virus has no effect on children except those children it affects.

 11. Animals are not affected, but there was a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there.

 12. Stay 2 metres away from tigers (see point 11).

 13. You will have many symptoms if you get the virus, but you can also get symptoms without getting the virus, get the virus without having any symptoms or be contagious without having symptoms, or be non-contagious with symptoms… it’s a sort of lucky/unlucky dip.

 14. To help protect yourself you should eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand as it’s better not to go to the shops, unless you need toilet rolls or a fence panel.

 15. It’s important to get fresh air but don’t go to parks, but go for a walk. But don’t sit down, except if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant or if you’re not old or pregnant but need to sit down. If you do sit down don’t eat your picnic, unless you’ve had a long walk, which you are/aren’t allowed to do if you’re old or pregnant.

 16. Don’t visit old people but you have to take care of the old people and bring them food and medication.

 17. If you are sick, you can go out when you are better but anyone else in your household can’t go out when you are better unless they need to go out.

 18. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house. These deliveries are safe. But groceries you bring back to your house have to be decontaminated outside for 3 hours including frozen pizza.

 19. You can’t see your older mother or grandmother, but they can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.

 20. You are safe if you maintain the safe social distance when out, but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.

 21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours… or four hours… or six hours… I mean days, not hours. But it needs a damp environment. Or a cold environment that is warm and dry… in the air, as long as the air is not plastic.

 22. Schools are closed so you need to home educate your children, unless you can send them to school because you’re not at home. If you are at home you can home educate your children using various portals and virtual class rooms, unless you have poor internet, or more than one child and only one computer, or you are working from home. Baking cakes can be considered maths, science or art. If you are home educating you can include household chores within their education. If you are home educating you can start drinking at 10am.

 23. If you are not home educating children you can also start drinking at 10am.

 24. The number of Coronavirus-related deaths will be announced daily but we don’t know how many people are infected as they are only testing those who are almost dead to find out if that’s what they will die of. The people who die of Coronavirus who aren’t counted, won’t or will be counted but maybe not.

 25. We should stay in lockdown until the virus stops infecting people, but it will only stop infecting people if we all get infected, so it’s important we get infected and some don’t get infected.

 26. You can join your neighbours for a street party and turn your music up for an outside disco and your neighbours won’t call the police. People in another street are allowed to call the police about your music whilst also having a party which you are allowed to call the police about.

 27. No business will go down due to Coronavirus except those businesses that will go down due to Coronavirus.

Hope that makes things clearer for you

That’s so sad LQ. RIP

@JBR  I received that in an email too. Damned confuzzling ain’t it?

Perhaps I should apologise for posting that here, especially following that sad post by LQ.

Again we hav encouraging figures today. 50% down from 2 days ago.

Hey Brucy what happened to the cases per million figures there?
They seem to have gone in reverse???

Donkeyman!

dood I thought you said you were one of the ones who got the NHS letter because you had conditions making you vulnerable ?
Vulnerable are not supposed to go out . Or am I wrong on that point ?
This is what the guidance says for vulnerables

How to protect yourself from coronavirus

People most at risk from coronavirus need to take extra steps to avoid getting it. This is known as “shielding”.

It’s recommended you follow this advice for at least 12 weeks.

Do
stay at home at all times

Do not
leave your home to buy food, collect medicine or exercise

How do you eat ?
Someone has to get food it’s not always easy to get a delivery slot.

Vulnerable?

Ah, but see no. 6 on my list in post #3028

I did read that as from the first of Feb that people from aboard had to spend 14 days in isolation on Christmas Island.

Think that’s why your deaths and infection rate is a lot lower than the UK

Contrary to popular belief, and South Korea, it is believed that recovered cases will have built up antibodies and will not catch it again, or if they do it will be a lot less serious. Based on this, they are collecting blood from recovered patients to see if it can be used to provide antibodies for those not infected yet…

From the BBC…

The UK is gearing up to use the blood of coronavirus survivors to treat hospital patients ill with the disease.

NHS Blood and Transplant is asking some people who recovered from Covid-19 to donate blood so they can potentially assess the therapy in trials.

The hope is that the antibodies they have built up will help to clear the virus in others.

The US has already started a major project to study this, involving more than 1,500 hospitals.

I did find it rather odd that people who have recovered had not built up a resistance to the virus…Isn’t this why they recovered?
This is how the body works, by identifying the virus and breaking down it’s defence.
The body will be more prepared the next time…

we should have sent people to the Isle of Man…

Let’s hope the plasma doesn’t infect people with the virus…my understanding was that it was meant to be used to treat people who already had the virus but were not fighting it well.

By giving patients a weak strain of the virus will allow the body to adjust it’s defences. Isn’t this how most vaccinations work Annie?

It is believed that most patients who die have been infected by a large amount of the virus, perhaps even infected several times, which overpowers the bodies immune system before it has time to fight.
