Coronavirus

Very much so.

The SARS pandemic started out with an R0 (or R naught) of 3 and that was eventually reduced to 0.4.

This new Coronavirus has an R0 of 1.4-2.5 which is not especially high

So we’re flying them home. Landing in Oxfordshire and then going on to a NHS hospital in the North somewhere.

I don’t envy the other patients. I thought there was talk of using some military establishment?

Coming home last night we passed a hotel near the Barbican, out side were 2 paramedics BOTH were dressed in full hazmat suits, looks like we have it here, although nothing on the local news as yet

They have been testing people so may be another false alarm.

Concern re York hotel guest reported in here https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/coronavirus-york-ill-cruise-quarantined-17657789

It’s only a matter of time. WHO have declared a global emergency.

Thinking this will cripple the cruising industry and likely other industries. Perhaps that’s the intention ?!

A Costa cruise ship is stuck in Italy after a Chinese woman, 54, showed symptoms and had been put in isolation alongside her husband and both of them tested for coronavirus.

It has taken a few days for the medics to conduct tests to see if she had the virus. In the meantime the Italian port authorities refused permission for passengers to go ashore. That’s 6000 passengers and 1000 staff unable to go ashore just because they had to follow testing protocols for someone who had a fever.

In the last few hours it has been confirmed that it wasn’t Coronavirus and the passengers are being allowed to disembark.

However the implications here are clear imo. EVERY SINGLE CRUISE sees a number of passengers present with various cold/flu like symptoms and fevers. Every single one. So what are they going to do now?

Immediately isolate any passenger that has a sniffle and then effectively stop the entire ship’s company and passengers from getting off at ports until the days of testing go by and the affected passenger is cleared?

Make no mistake this is an absolute crisis for all cruise lines and for port authorities. It’s going to lead to massive loss of revenue as people cancel their cruises in droves. Not because they fear catching the virus, but because it’s a nailed on certainty that people will have cold viruses which display the same symptoms as Coronavirus and so they will get isolated and the cruise itinerary will be impacted for all other passengers. I doubt that the cruise lines would even compensate passengers for loss of ports under these circumstances. This could cripple cruise lines and see lesser ones go bust imo.

Carnival Cruise Lines are the largest in the world and encompass 7 or more well known cruise lines including Cunard, P&O, Princess and others. Their share price has already tanked about 20% and will imo continue to plummet.

If anyone has shares in any companies related to travel, airlines, cruising, holiday operators and so on then personally I would sell them as quickly as possible. There will be opportunities later on to buy shares at crushed prices and make significant profits once the Coronavirus problem goes away.

Article on the Costa ship in Italy

Better a few disgruntled passengers than a savage epidemic wiping out hundreds of people like the ‘Spanish Flu’ did years ago.

Not surprised, Primus, given the vast number of Chinese in York just now. The University is full of them - and their families seem to visit regularly so there is a lot of travel between China and here.

That’s what I heard too, Mort.
A military establishment in the North West I believe.

Too right, Tabs.

It’s not going to be a few disgruntled passengers. Cruise lines will see customers cancel their cruises in their droves. Each ship has say 3000-5000 passengers each paying say £3000. It’s a huge amount of lost revenue if tons of people cancel and don’t cruise anymore on the basis that their cruises would be ruined by the medical protocols involved.

It will cripple the industry.

I thought the cruise liner industry wasn’t very environmentally friendly. Next there will be a theory that this was engineered by eco warriors to reduce the world’s population.

Sshh, Annie. lol.

 I know it’s off topic but honestly!

But honestly . . . if anyone thinks these viruses just happen out of nature they need their head seeing to. Lab manufactured. And global de-population is well known by most awake people. It’s called Agenda 21

It doesn’t matter to me where it originated, I’m concerned about the people suffering and dying and am hoping we can contain and eradicate it. There are nasty viruses everywhere on this planet if we look for them. They have always been there and somehow by chance we stumble across them just by living here. It’s not like someone originally created the bubonic plague in a lab.

The plain fact is that flu virus do originate with various types of animals. Bird flu, swine flu etc etc. The virus mutates on it’s own and jumps species. I don’t immediately recall which type of flu it was a few years back but the Chinese gov’t were forced to kill off millions of chickens.

Until and unless there is absolute proof of an “agenda” , I refuse to become worried to the point of paranoia.

It amazes me how some folks will go far out of their way to create conspiracy theories.

Yes I agree Bakerman…there is enough bad things in the world without no proof conspiracy theories…sorry Realist just my opinion.

I still say better that than thousands of deaths, Realist. The cruise industry will survive - vulnerable people won’t.
