Cases have fallen sharply, deaths have fallen sharply, hospitalisations high but falling (as of 26/11), tests ONLY 41% capacity of 530,000 (as of 29/11) … :expressionless:

OTOH:

Covid infections in England fall by 30% over lockdown - React study

Some of the worst-hit areas saw the biggest improvements - but, despite this progress, cases remained relatively high across England.

The findings by Imperial College London were based on swabbing more than 100,000 people between 13-24 November.

The React-1 study is highly respected and gives us the most up-to-date picture of Covid-19 in the country.

Its researchers estimated the virus’s reproduction (R) rate had fallen to 0.88. That means on average every infection translated to less than one other new infection, so the epidemic is shrinking.

Before the recent study, cases were accelerating - doubling every nine days when the study last reported at the end of October.

Now cases are coming down, but more slowly than they shot up - halving roughly every 37 days.

BUT:

Covid: Shops in England can open 24 hours a day over Christmas

Local authorities will be able to temporarily waive the rules restricting retail opening hours.

Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, said the relaxation of the rules would allow shopping to be “more pleasant and safer”.

Shopkeepers and councils would decide how long stores stay open, he added.

Months of restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus have hit the High Street hard, and the hope is the relaxation of opening hours will boost business. The new rules would run from Monday to Saturday.

“None of us, I suspect, enjoys navigating the crowds, and none would relish that when social distancing is so important to controlling the virus,” Mr Jenrick wrote. “These changes mean your local shops can open longer, ensuring more pleasant and safer shopping, with less pressure on public transport.”

All the good work of the last month undone by Christmas … :?:

A “Third Wave” in January … :090:

Hi

You seriously do not want to have to go into Hospital.

There are huge waiting times on trolleys with no social distancing or masks whatsoever.

It is a nightmare.

I had to visit my local (large) hospital for venesection (blood-letting) last week - masks and social distancing prevail in “Out-Patients” but I don’t know about “In-Patients” or “A&E”.

I asked my nurse if she’d been tested for COVID-19 recently and she said “No” - testing had been curtailed for reasons that she knew but was unable to divulge to me … :!:

Quite likely Omah!

Depends on the morons entirely !
Follow the rules, or do it again??

Donkeyman!

With the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine being approved for use next week in UK, the appalling figures currently being reported should begin to fall, but that may be somewhat offset by figures reported from the proposed mass testing programs.

Someone really need to get to grips with testing - despite government promises, “Incompetent” Harding is still failing abysmally to achieve the testing centre targets of more than 80% … :!:

Hi

Infection rates have fallen hugely here, now down to 61.

Going down to the river to fish means infection rates of over 200.

Covid-19 vaccine: First person receives Pfizer jab in UK

A UK grandmother has become the first person in the world to be given the Pfizer Covid-19 jab as part of a mass vaccination programme.

Margaret Keenan, who turns 91 next week, said it was the “best early birthday present”.

She was given the injection at 06:31 GMT - the first of 800,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine that will be dispensed in the coming weeks.

Up to four million more are expected by the end of the month.

How infection/death statistics are affected will take several months to establish and, probably, a year or more to confirm.

England’s three-tier system is due to be reviewed on 16 December.

Decisions on tiers are made by ministers, based on the latest available data and advice from public health experts.

Relaxing Covid restrictions could trigger a third wave of the virus during the busiest time of year for hospitals, NHS bosses have warned.

In its letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, NHS Providers said while there were “good signs of progress” in some parts of the country, there was a “worrying increase in infection rates across a wide range of areas”, including Essex, Kent, London and parts of Lincolnshire.

It called for areas to be moved into tier three - the highest level of restrictions - “as soon as this is needed, without any delay”.

Earlier this week, some health experts called for the capital to be placed in tier three “now” after official figures showed Outer London had a higher infection rate than some areas already in the top tier.

NHS Providers added that “the evidence of the second wave suggests that unless infection rates fall to a very low level, as they did in London after the first wave, the virus will spread again quickly as soon as restrictions on social contact are relaxed”.

“Trust leaders are worried that if infection rates remain as high as they are at the moment, relaxing the restrictions will trigger a third wave,” it said.

With new cases running at over 20,000 per day (600,000 per month), it seems patently obvious that the pandemic is still not under control, even with the present restrictions (allegedly) in place, so any relaxation of rules must exacerbate the situation … but will BJ heed NHS advice or, as usual, go for the populist solution … :?:
