You’d have to look at Australian trends for this time of year. Flu season here is Oct to Feb.
The last time we had this many on ventilator beds was 14th July. Similar with the number in hospital. The numbers being admitted go back to the start of July. I can see why they are starting to panic. The increase in ventilator beds will lead to an increase in deaths.
Covid: £1,000 - £10,000 fines for self-isolation breaches
Announcing the new rules for England, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the best way to fight the virus was for everyone to follow the rules.
“So nobody underestimates just how important this is, new regulations will mean you are legally obliged to do so if you have the virus or have been asked to do so by NHS Test and Trace. People who choose to ignore the rules will face significant fines. We need to do all we can to control the spread of this virus, to prevent the most vulnerable people from becoming infected, and to protect the NHS and save lives”, he said.

Better late than never with “rules” - advice which was complex and kept changing was never going to work:
Existing regulations are too often flouted and are not being effectively enforced - as many as 4 out of 5 people who should be self-isolating bend or break the rules.
Resulting in the current shambles … 
I’d love to see how they will enforce these rules. For example those coming from banned countries are free to come and go as they please. The existing rules are that they can offend several times before they reach the highest fine, that’s if they are on a random sample to follow up. They can keep setting new rules but if they want people to take them seriously they need to be enforced. They appear to come up with rules without checking whether they are enforceable on the ground. It screams lack of stakeholder engagement.

I don’t know. But ONS say (2019) about 1400 people die everyday in the UK.
I think that Boris is overreacting now as, going by the figures, things are nowhere near as bad as they have been.
On the other hand, taking this as an example:
it is clear that there are some very irresponsible, couldn’t care less idiots in this country, and I think that behaviour like this should result in the most severe punishments.
On Friday, Marge was attempting to get back to civilisation having visited her sister in Eastbourne, her journey of necessity entailing a route through Londonistan.
As one might expect, the rail journey from Euston to Stockport was severely delayed by the ubiquitous ‘signalling problems’ which resulted in the few trains which did run being crammed full. Even Marge’s first class carriage was crammed full (she intends to claim a refund).
In amongst the generally well-behaved passengers, she told me was a group of yobs who were celebrating something by travelling to Manchester for some sort of binge.
Unlike most of the passengers, they refused to wear masks, enjoyed shouting and swearing and generally behaving like schoolchildren. A guard of some sort approached them but, contrary to everyone’s hopes, simply stood chatting and laughing with them.
Such people should be locked up and isolated as a punishment for their potentially dangerous behaviour.
In short, instead of locking everyone down, the authorities should concentrate on the irresponsible individuals and put them away for the protection of the rest of us.
Huge crowds flock to ‘heaving’ Blackpool
The contributor says “Lancashire going into lockdown with the exception of Blackpool??? This was Blackpool last night! no social distancing anywhere, no masks worn in any amusements or shop…it’s a joke! I took these pictures myself so before anyone says it clever angles etc - it isn’t.”

Covid: UK at ‘critical point’ in pandemic, top scientists to warn
The UK is at a “critical point” in the coronavirus pandemic and “heading in the wrong direction”, the government’s chief medical officer will warn later.
Prof Chris Whitty believes the country is facing a “very challenging winter period” and will hold a televised briefing at 11:00 BST.
At the briefing, Prof Whitty will be joined by the government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, to present the latest data.
Prof Whitty is expected to say: “We are looking at the data to see how to manage the spread of the virus ahead of a very challenging winter period.”
The two scientists are expected to explain how the virus is spreading and the potential scenarios as the winter approaches.
It will NOT be good news … 
People are starting to go a bit crazy now. It wasn’t so bad in the Spring and Summer. But the long Autumn nights in yet another lockdown will drive many nuts. Plus some of us are bound to get colds and maybe flu. Then you have sleepless nights worrying it’s Covid.
It’s not so bad if you have an income but without furlough many will be really anxious.
Yes, but of course it’s Blackpool and those people are all ‘of a type’! A place I shall never visit.
And of course, that decision demonstrates without any doubt in my mind that the authorities haven’t a clue what to do!
They lock down relatively safe places and ignore behaviour like this in others. They seem to be totally without logic.
A good friend of ours who lives in Clitheroe, Lancashire is annoyed that his area - largely open countryside with a low incidence of Covid - is to be locked down from tomorrow, yet here we have Blackpool which is not a million miles away from him which isn’t!
Some of those morons will have returned to Cheshire, possibly carrying an unexpected gift … :shock:
That was because they were crammed on to the first class carriages because there were large crowds of people who had missed their proposed trains due to widespread cancellation.
Marge booked a first class seat in the hope of keeping a distance from other people, for obvious reasons!
Covid-19: UK faces 50,000 cases a day by October without action - Vallance
Speaking at a briefing at Downing St alongside the government’s chief medical adviser, Prof Chris Whitty, Sir Patrick, the government’s chief scientific adviser, said: “At the moment we think the epidemic is doubling roughly every seven days. If, and that’s quite a big if, but if that continues unabated and this grows doubling every seven days… if that continued you would end up with something like 50,000 cases in the middle of October per day. 50,000 cases per day would be expected to lead a month later, so the middle of November say, to 200-plus deaths per day. The challenge therefore is to make sure the doubling time does not stay at seven days.”

Well I live in Cheshire and I didn’t spot anyone go by with a Kiss Me Quick hat on. 
I’ve just been to the local Asda and the shelves are virtually empty of toilet roll again.
