Constipation and A&E

Many people think enemas are much safer than laxatives (you can get kidney failure from those!)

Constipation is sometimes an indication of having picked up a bug that has upset your microbiota, so you may want to look into fermented foods to help repopulate your gut with good bacteria/microbes. Homemade yogurt, Kefir, sauerkraut etc.

Hope you get well soon Om!

@Omah I feel for you, I really do.
One of my daily heart meds tends to keep my body fluids at a slightly low level and hence the tendency of erratic constipation. A specialist prescribed a single sachet of Movicol daily before my main meal and everything soon reverted to my usually early morning visit to my bathroom. The compound works by keeping the bowel supplied with fluid and for me works very well indeed.
I cannot say if this treatment will work for you, but it is something worth bearing in mind.

Unfortunaly, I have the opposite problem in the extreme - severe ulcerative colitis.

The cause of my problem may well be not enough fluids - I may drink less than a pint during the day and maybe a pint in the evening.

I was taking 2x13mg sachets of Laxido (same as Movicol) 3 times a day until a couple of hours ago when the side-effect of diarrhoea became persistent. Since I’m now taking Lactulose, I’m halving the Laxido and may drop it altogether if diarrhoea becomes persistent again.

I’m just the same Omah, I never feel thirsty, even when I was running I didn’t drink enough.
I do occasionally suffer with constipation but beans on toast usually loosens things up.
I also find that if I’m injured or inactive bowel movements really slow down. A hot drink of fruit tea first thing in the mornings keeps me regular…usually…Good luck.
@LongDriver which heart medication did you have trouble with? I’m also on heart meds.

I needed to take Cosmocol (same as Movicol) when I had the inguinal and umbilical hernia ops. Lots of internal and external stitches and couldn’t push. Not taking it now but one natural thing that works is a raw red pepper sliced up and eaten with a Taramasalata dip. That’s something I really enjoy but it does have an undesirable side effect next day (just calll it ‘loose’). It might be a desirable one in your case.

Synthetic food made in the lab and eaten by vegetarians and vegans, usually plant based, provides very loose stools, sometimes at inappropriate times…
We like veggie sausages, but had to stop eating them because of accidents on my early morning walks…

apparently drinking boiled plain hot water first thing in the morning before you drink or eat anything else is meant to get things moving down there. Some say having a teaspoon of olive oil once a day is good too.

Or adding a little lemon juice

A small 20mg dose of furosemide every other day. It’s supposed to help the heart with pumping load by slightly reducing total blood volume in the over 75’s and also stop the lungs from any fluid accumulation. Sometimes if I’m going to be out for a long time, then even if it’s a due day, I omit taking it, because it sure does make one pee😁

Thanks LongDriver, I don’t take furosemide but do get a build up of fluids round my ankles occasionally. I’ll try and resist taking it for as long as I can. I’m on ramipril and a beta blocker but I only take half of the beta blocker and it still stops my tachycardia.

Perhaps you should start eating soup for lunch and as an evening meal starter. Aside from the nutrition positives, it will increase your liquid intake and you can have soups made with lentils or veg that loosen everything up. Fresh figs are also very nice for breakfast and lunch and can be served with either sweet or savoury dishes. I think they are still in season.

The foods that clog you up are the ones that they recommend for the opposite problem - so rice, bread, pasta toast. A friend who was having similar problems while going through chemo was advised to eat an anti inflammation diet. She was hospitalised more than once until she completely cut out the foods on the banned list. It seems that was caused by the side effects of some of the anti-nausea drugs they were giving her.

I’m very sorry to hear that. It must be difficult to manage.

Thank you, Annie. I should have some new treatment next week.
