Conservative Party Leadership Contest 2022

I bet there’s a lot of feverish phoning round and a lot of string pulling going on behind the scenes to pick up those votes from the supporters of the candidates who dropped out!

Conservative MPs will vote again on Tuesday as they continue the process of choosing the two candidates for leader who will be put to a vote of members.

One of the four remaining contenders - Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss, and Kemi Badenoch - will be eliminated when the result is announced later.

Mr Sunak looks almost certain to make the final two, with the other three candidates vying for second place.

Senior backbencher Tom Tugendhat was knocked out after Monday’s vote of MPs.

Separately, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold his last scheduled cabinet meeting on Tuesday ahead of Westminster’s summer recess.

The Conservative Party wants MPs to have chosen the two candidates to replace him before the Commons finishes on Thursday - with the final vote set to take place on Wednesday.

Badenoch out of Tory leadership contest, as Truss gets closer to Mordaunt, with Sunak still leading

Sir Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee, reads out the result. He starts: “Nearly there.” The last ballot is tomorrow

Rishi Sunak - 118 (up 3)

Penny Mordaunt - 92 (up 10)

Liz Truss - 86 (up 15)

Kemi Badenoch - 59 (up 1)

Why would anyone vote for the incompetent Truss?

Is it to make sure that Mordaunt never gets to the last 2, where her popularity with the party members could be significant?

Kemi Badenoch has been eliminated from the Tory leadership contest in a result that will be a sigh of relief for Liz Truss unfortunately.

I’m glad of that…

Our Next Prime Minister will be broadcast on BBC One at 21:00 BST on Monday, presented by Sophie Raworth.

The BBC has confirmed that all three remaining candidates have agreed to participate in the debate if they make it to the final two, after Sky News was forced to cancel its own planned debate when Mr Sunak and Ms Truss declined to take part.

Our Next Prime Minister will take place in front of an audience of between 80 and 100 people in Stoke-on-Trent.

Joining Raworth on the show will be BBC political editor Chris Mason and BBC economics editor Faisal Islam, who will be providing their analysis on the candidates’ answers.

The show will also be simulcast on BBC Radio 5 Live with coverage continuing after the debate and across the BBC News website and the BBC News Channel.

Sadly, I’ve got to reorganise my bootlaces that night … :man_shrugging:

I think so too…the rest was just playtime for the others. Probably to make it seem more “real” to us plebs

Shame. Not only would she have been a good PM, it would have made the likes of David Lammy, and the rest of the black labour front bench, apoplectic that a black woman could be in such a position.

Just what we need, another incompetent chancellor of the exchequer being made PM. It has signs of the Gordon Brown tenure.

You leave our Gordon alone…he is a good decent honest man.

Unlike your computer hacking criminal woman!

Good and decent, he maybe. Incompetent, definitely.

What computer hacking criminal woman?

Your Kemi whatsername - she hacked into a Labour womens webiste, changed all the stuff in it to favour Cons, and then bragged about it online! Numpty.

Not mine. I prefer Penny Mordaunt. Her, or Liz Truss, anyone but Sunak.

Edited to add. A quick Google tells me that it was ten years ago, five years before she became an MP.

He sold a huge chunk of our gold reserves at bottom dollar. Also his tax changes made a huge hole in my private pension pot.

To his brother-in-law, too.

Well, I never knew that, pretty scummy behaviour, couldn’t they have sued?:balance_scale: :man_judge:

Bragging about doing something that dodgy means we’ve got another Tory on our hands who’s arrogant enough to think the rules of decent behaviour don’t apply to them and that everyone should find it funny and go along with it because it’s them :woman_shrugging:

Definitely Daughter of Johnson

I’m glad she’s out, hope her career in politics is short and doomed :crossed_fingers:
