Churches And Gravestones

Yeah, well I’m sure the Earth would love to oblige, Minx, but she is kinda busy dealing with other stuff right now…so, looks like you might have to just suffer getting to 50 like the rest of us :joy: Not that it IS a sufferance, of course…

Saint Michel d’Aiguilhe

Getting to the Saint Michel d’Aiguilhe is a challenge in and of itself. This amazing church is perched on a rocky point, and to reach it you’ll have to climb 268 steep steps carved right into the rock face. The climb is well worth the effort, however, because you’ll get the chance to see the sacred brick and rock building constructed in the middle of the 10th century. The church looks incredible from below, but getting to the top also provides stunning vistas over the French landscape and the city of Aiguilhe.

Mont Saint Michel
Part of the appeal and beauty of the Mont Saint Michel Abbey owes to its location. The island of Mont Saint Michel is just half a mile off the coast near Normandy, making access limited. Approaching the island, you’ll see the abbey rise from the water, occupying a large portion of the island itself. Built in the 15th century, and still home to Benedictine monks, the abbey is surrounded by quaint streets, shops, cafes and museums devoted to the island and its history.

If only I’d visited this church when I was in France

As interest in the churches and gravestones themselves seems to have waned a little, It is perhaps a good time to broach the subject of what else is to be found on these ecclesiastical premises. Well it depends on the state of the graveyard of course, and most people don’t seem to notice it at all, but when I enter a churchyard one of the first things that comes to my attention is all the semi-transparent characters milling about among the gravestones. Some will appear to be in conversation with fellow residents, although there is never the sound of a voice to be heard, and others will be wandering about between the graves aimlessly.

Their number always seems to be proportionate to the condition of the graveyard. The older and more neglected it looks, the more of them there seem to be. I can only assume that they are not aware of my being there, or that my presence is of absolutely no interest to them, as they never so much as glance at me. Their absence on my photos is something that I have no explanation for. :102:

Seriously, any ghostly stories to share?

It’s a bit short notice, Minx, you’ll have to give me some time to remember one or two.

I think it’s a great topic considering it’s almost Halloween :jack_o_lantern:

We’d better try and do something with it then, hadn’t we?
