This is true. A friends brother in law once gave her a cabbage for Christmas, she hates cabbage. Another year he gave her a Barbie doll, she prefers Sindy. Does that count?

Long story, but a wedding invitation and decorum necessitated that I provide a wedding and shower gift to a middle-aged couple who were marrying as the result of an affair.
For the shower, I gave them a bird feeder.
For the wedding, I gave them a lovely blue ceramic bird bath.
Any guess what what my unspoken theme was for the newlyweds?
