All I have ever been able to distinguish are the what were called Iron Pot (Orion’s Belt and Sword) and the Southern Cross
Nothing else.
I was confounded trying to imagine which two stars represented Gemini the Twins.
I used to be able to recognise several, as you say Orion’s belt is the most obvious. I was surprised at how small the Southern Cross is, I always imagined it bigger.
Google has an excellent phone app for finding all the constellations, planets etc called Sky Map then you will be able to see them all.
The best program for ‘desktop astronomy’ is Stellarium, which is free. Not only does it show all the constellations, but pretty much every known objects (I think its database is about 9 million or so). It’s not the easiest to use and uses a lot of astronomical terms and conventions, but it certainly does the job.
Thank you. I will seek it out.
i suppose in the southern hemisphere you see different things wish i had a telescope
In the densely populated south east we get a hell of a lot of light pollution. Being next door to Gatwick Airport doesn’t help. It’s not until you get way out into the sticks that you appreciate the difference, quite staggering!
im from south africa=in certain the stars are absolutely beautiful at night
I live in a city of over 2 million people.
For me to see the Milky Way in its full magnificence, I need to drive at least 100 kms. ![]()
