I must confess that when I saw this thread I had to look up Burns night, I’d never heard of it before. It’s my dad’s birthday today too, he’s 91, I’ll tell him tomorrow when we go for lunch that he shares his birth date with a famous Scottish poet.
Hi Rose2.
Maybe maybe not so many people would know about Robert Burns. Much of his works were in the local dialect. He was born on 1759 and died 1796 but he was a prolific writer. One of the more famous works was Tam O’Shanter, a wonderful epic poem. You might like it.
Yes, himself …
I am not a member but I go to the Burns Club in Canberra as often as I can because they have the best Buffet I have ever been to.
We studied a little about Robert Burns at school and that poem you mentiond is definitely one that our English teacher let us read. I was only about 14 at the time, I hate to say now that I didn’t enjoy my Literature lessons much. Now I’d love to go back in time and restudy everything again, you just don’t appreciate such talent when you’re a youngster, I found all poetry difficult to understand. You’ve got me curious now, I’m going to find that narrative poem and re-read it.
Morning Rose2. I too, didn’t like much literature either at that age. Geoffrey Chaucer I did like but my field was power electronics.
Oh Chaucer, that was really the worst for me, the only authors I didn’t mind were Shakespeare, Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. I couldn’t believe it when I managed to pass my A level exam.
And you did good !
Thank you, I just made it, Grade C!
The big question for Burn’s Night is not which poems will be recited - but what soup for the first course? Simply mutton broth, or cock-a-leekie or cullen skink? Major decisions.
