“I swear by almighty God that I will be faithful, and bear true allegiance to his Majesty King Charles III, his heirs and successors, and that I will as in duty bound, honestly and faithfully defend his Majesty, his heirs and successors in person, crown and dignity, against all enemies, and will observe and obey all orders of His Majesty, his heirs and successors and the generals and officers set over me.”
Australia
“I, (name), swear that I will well and truly serve His Majesty King Charles the Third, His Heirs and Successors according to law, as a member of the (insert Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army, or Royal Australian Air Force) … and that I will resist his enemies and faithfully discharge my duty according to law. SO HELP ME GOD!”
USA
“I, (state name of enlistee), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. (So help me God).”
Looks like Kings and Presidents have it all over us common folk. In the UK you don’t even need a name (?)
I don’t know about the worst government in history, though they seem to get successively worse … but most noticeable to me is the total lack of opposition parties or dearth of credible contenders to even run a decent political party.
British politics seems to be in a rut.
Surely the worst Government for a few centuries has to be the one Liz the lettuce Truss oversaw. No other government has wrecked the UK economy as effectively. Other governments taking years to achieve what Lizzy Lettuce achieved in just 49 days. Beyond that, the Roundhead parliamentarians take some beating.
I actually voted for Blair, he seemed to be the good guy of politics at the time, but you mention the things we are still paying for from the Thatcher years, looking back, I think the Blair years have left us with far worse. He made it so all our young people would go to university whether they were academics or not and we lost some very important skilled apprentice trained manual workers, together with the best of our industries.
Just as a matter of fact Annie, Blair is behind Starmer and this government and they take their cue from him. He put forward the digital ID and tried to get vaccinations mandatory during covid. He’s a very bad self serving man Annie…
Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng had some brilliant ideas and the Tory party thought so too by voting her into power. She was not given a chance to put her policies into practice and she was undermined and used as a scapegoat for the incompetence of Boris and the destruction of the economy during covid.
I can’t believe that anyone could fall for the propaganda that she made a mess of things when she wasn’t in power long enough to do any damage, the IMF saw to that by summoning Kwasi to New York and forcing him and Liz to fall on their sword and resign.
You have to remember that our government have to ultimately take orders from the people who we owe for the national debt.
The problem is Bruce, we can only vote for the parties that are on the ballot sheet and the ruling classes with their manipulation of the media can discredit any party that might be able to challenge the big two. It’s happening with Farage and the reform party, but things have got so bad that even with the bad press people are supporting the new kid on the block.
Watch this space…
I think what Annie means is, while we are fighting each other, we are not fighting them.
They deliberately incite hate between groups of people, it’s quite obvious if you think about it…
I quite liked the three day week, if gave me more time to spend with my family and a rest from the hum drum monotony of working every day of the week…
Quote:- The Three-Day Week was one of several measures introduced in the United Kingdom from 1973 to 1974 by Edward Heath’s Conservative government to conserve electricity, the generation of which was severely restricted owing to industrial action by coal miners and railway workers…
They certainly made sure that no group of workers could hold the country to ransom again.
Dismantled the coal mining industry and decided that CO2 was to blame for all the countries woes so nobody missed the coal mining industry…or the steel making industry…or the fishing industry…or the farming industry…Just buy your stuff from China or the EU and the Chinese and the fat cats in Brussels will be over the moon to boost their economy and stop British workers from ever making a fool of the government again. Now do you understand the reason behind ‘Net Zero’?
The one thing I disliked about Britain when I lived there was summed up by the word “class”, where the way you talk determines your status in society…
I had always assumed that the class system would decline over time but here we have it still dividing “them” and “us” - still a real part of so many on the forum.
Trump visit flags replaced as ‘wrong shade of red’ costing taxpayer £50,000’’
Nick Farley, the Government’s official flag supplier, said 66 hand-stitched Stars and Stripes were ordered ahead of the visit, at a cost of more than £50,000 to the taxpayer.
He told The Telegraph that the United States insisted on a “cherry red” version of the flag for the three-day trip, rather than the shade usually used for the Union Jack, known as R01.
“Their red is now stronger than the red on the Union flag,” Mr Farley said.
“The Americans decided that the red we use wasn’t right for them, so we had to buy all new flags for this visit.”
Decades ago at Ft. Campbell KY I met UK infantry think it was a few platoons there but do not recall for what as you have your own rappelling , etc schools .
They certainly spoke bit different then their officers , they were as wild as we were , we shared same mess hall and a shape no black pudding in honor of our friends .
Though I am bit chauvinistic my Doctor is a woman from India , brilliant woman and she was telling me some time ago about the class system there and how difficult to climb out but again this is India not UK but agree how absurd that is .
Enlistees swear to obey the Legal orders of the Potus and those above him, not the Constitution of the USA as do the Officers when they swear in, they swear / agree to support the Legal laws of the Constitution of the USA, not necessarily the POTUS or possibly unlawfully placed orders of others.
What’s wrong with what is going on now. Well States rights are beign trampled. Those troops in Chicago land may be found to be lawlessly there and in hazard of being found Felons under illini’s Constitutional laws…
Maybe the rest of their lives not safe in Illini under illini’s laws.
My brother did basic training at Ft. Campbell, I remember well, out on the range and Tank rounds
going down into that valley to strike targets and the tracers breaking off and flying straight up in the air.
My chest being beaten by the concussions as I was 100 yards away from those rows of tanks that night.
I well remember the large trees that tanks had hit bending well over to fall soon.
I remember the tank repair crews and their tanks without turrets to haul broken tread tanks back to shops.
