I suspect after getting such favourable terms from the U.K. the EU one does look like a dud to Australia
Which just shows how gullible and desperate the U.K. and the Brexiteers were post Brexit to try to prove Brexit itself wasn’t a dud and they could get good FTAs elsewhere
But no FTA is always better than a bad one and it was wrong to sacrifice our country’s interests and the environment and local products to try to pretend Brexit isn’t a crock
And well done to the EU for holding out in their members interests and on principles, shame our lot haven’t got that integrity
I am not sure that is true, Australia has about 20 FTAs plus a few pending or under negotiation. Certainly is it is very experienced at negotiating them over the decades whereas Britain lacks that experience as the EU did it for you (isn’t that why you left?).
All FTAs Australia negotiates must benefit Australia’s agriculture, that is the bottom line, if they don’t, they don’t happen. Tariffs are not always reduced to zero but they are reduced over time (eg UK, USA and Japan) but FTAs are a two way street, give some, get some.
British agriculture cannot feed its population, hasn’t been able to for over a century, it has also produced mad cow, salmonella chooks etc at least our produce is disease free, clean and green. You are better off building houses for your population and letting others feed you. That is just a fact of life.
I didn’t leave, I was dragged out steaming and kicking against my will by the bullying Brexiteers. I am truly ashamed of what our country did to our allies in the EU
And certainly the EU negotiating FTAs for all it’s members was another good thing we’re going to miss. More clout together
British agriculture can partly feed our population and we should be trying to encourage our own agriculture to become more self sufficient. Not negotiating FTAs to flood our market with cheap foreign produce, produced under different rules and regulations, that our farmers can’t compete with
And what we can’t produce ourselves we should import from our closer neighbours in the EU. Greener and more regulated
Let me put it another way - this sounds like a lot more red tape. Isn’t reduction of red tape one of the reasons people wanted to leave the EU? Your point seems to be that you want to continue to feed the beast you sought to destroy…
I don’t understand. Back in 2016 everyone who voted leave seemed to say it was not about hating foreigners. Now you are saying it was. You are saying it was all about stopping nasty non-English people coming here. Were people lying all this time?
I proposed that the campaign back in 2016 was full of lies. Not you, the campaign. You then called me, specifically me, a liar. Not pot and kettle. Me generalising. You being specific against one person. You need to go have a word with your (paranoid and chip on the shoulder) self. And start addressing the post and not the person. End of discussion about you.
