When standing under an archway and look up, what you see from below is the Soffit.
The underside of an arch.
Where you can dream your dreams away.
Worry about softouches not soffits
Thanks for the info! The soffit really does get “under”appreciated—guess it’s always hanging out in the background! It’s always great to learn something new and add a few funny puns to our architectural knowledge.
Soffits don’t just hang out under archways, though, do they?
A couple of years ago, I remember having to replace all the rotten wooden planks that lined the overhang of the house roof, between the edge of the roof and the brick wall all around my house - I’m sure that is called a Soffit - it is the underside of any architectural overhang, such as an archway, balcony or roof overhang.
While you were propped up against the wall with one hand, what was the free hand up to? Also what about barge boards and gable ends, surely they are worthy of a mention too alongside the facias and guttering to carry the rain water away from the roof …less favouritism please
Then what is this little shingled section?
That is classed as a “roof return” or a “cornice return” and not unknow to be troublesome.
we the whole house done (UPVC) as the facia and soffit also roof gutters replaced as what was there had rotted.discovered birds had got into and under and made a nest (empty) so that was taken away as well
it was built in the mid 80’s and most of the houses are or have had theirs done as well
its only a lttle modest house but I love it
also had a roof lead gulley replaced and the porch roof leaked so got that fixed. I actually did the under bit
and finished
I love this forum for building my knowledge. Thank you for that, LD!
My dad insisted on building these into every corner of the house during his construction, and remember them taking a whale of a lot of time perfecting them. They were originally covered with wood shakes.
