Bonfire Night: Garden fireworks 'traumatise' guide dogs and pets

What a pity he pulled it out…

Yes. because of all the things to deny oneself, I would suggest that unruly exploding devices isn’t such a great hardship to do without. If it were banned, people would forget all about it in a couple of years anyway.

A couple of years? Maybe not. The gunpowder plot was in 1605 !

Why is it still being celebrated in 2021? It has no relevance in modern life, and if all we can do to commemorate it is be loud and noisy, its not really worthy of celebrating is it?

Personally, I feel it is not only our pets who suffer though, Besoeker.

It is also wildlife, plus the fire risks, as well as accidents and burns, then there’s the number of weeks it goes on for. Our beloved pets are only part of it IMO.

I have a lot of large neighbouring trees around me, and if I go outside, and there is a particularly loud bang, the roosting birds panic and try to take off, but don’t know where to fly to or roost again in the dark. Then if they manage to resettle, another bang goes off.

Every year hedgehogs are burnt in bonfires. They are scarce enough as it is.

Every year people end up in A&E because of either stupidity or accidents.

And what about horses/cattle/sheep out in the fields. Do you think they understand what humans are doing, when their peace is shattered with flashes and bangs?

I could tolerate it more if it was made public displays only, run by people who know about safety first, plus it was allowed for ONE night only.

Well said Mups! If we need to put lives at risk to keep children happy, it must be a very sad world we live in! :open_mouth:

My fur babies were so traumatised. why the loud bangs!!!

Because lots of people enjoy it.

I know you all dislike the fireworks. Like yourselves, I do too. I’d rather prefer that they were made removed and made illegal. But is it my place to abolish someone’s enjoyment? Even if I could.

No, its our place. Together, as a society. Have you seen the amount of people who sign those petitions year after year? Its an archaic tradition which should stop now.

And I am really not condoning what they do. As you say, it is tradition. Like other traditions like Easter.

I understand you are not condoning it, Besoeker, and I’m not having a go at you by any means. :hugs: I do disagree that its like Easter though.
I’m happy to carry on discussing this via PM if you want to, rather than derail this thread?

You are a gem and I would not remotely consider you having a go at me! And PM would be good too if I can find it!

Ok, well I’ll send you one first then you can reply to it. However, if you want to send a message to someone, you click on their picture, and a box comes up next to it. On the right, you should see an orange box with “message”. Click that, and a box comes up rather like a reply box, and you just write and send. Anyway…I’ll send one to you in a second. :+1:

Some of tonight’s fireworks from the display in the park behind my house.

Very pretty, but by gum they didn’t half make a racket.

It’s interesting but I saw a meme showing a soldier being comforted by a ptsd dog as fireworks went off outside. It’s not just pets and wildlife that are affected. Some humans find fireworks very upsetting.
