Sorry Twink’s, and thanks for the thought but, it would be like asking Scott of the Antarctic to get his fix by foraging around in his freezer for a couple of days.
Fitness was never my goal when I started running almost forty years ago. Yes, it was my desire to run further and faster but only from natural progression.
Running along woodland trails with the smell of pine in my nostrils, or reaching the top of some remote mountain, or just padding along in a dream down some deserted country road feeling like I could run forever.
The love of running and nature is a powerful driver Twink’s and can not be done from the inside of any building, I would sooner hang up my running shoes forever than to have to concede defeat to the cold weather. I am quite aware of the Over 50’s female posse that hunt me down, and like the fox I will run to ground and avoid capture as long as I can, but if naked feet are to be stimulated in the name of medical science…I’ll be hiding in the brambles on the left…;-);-)
too much advise coming from he ladies OGF especially those single ones - take my advise “get ya arse in gear and just push through it and stop messing about”
you are also getting distracted by housework and home renovations - pack it in - get in the professionals from day one and get back on the tracks! - otherwise I must resign as your new coach for 2017!
Yes, exercise aids are in general pretty crap, you can dismount an exercise cycle at any time, you can’t a proper cycle if you are 5 miles from home (or car) and there are still three steep inclines to deal with.
Good advice from my two favourite guys on the forum. Absolutely right Spitty, the difference of cycling indoors on a static bike compared to the hills, wind and endurance that a day out on the roads can provide is a world apart. Man made exercise equipment is but a poor substitute for what nature provides naturally.
Here’s the plan Gumbud; After the last remains of this cold are safely behind me, and my recent attempts at a comeback have turned out to be unsuccessful, I intend to visit a local physio and see why this time [what usually has cleared up in two months] has not responded to rest and rehabilitation.
Don’t be too hasty in your decision to withdraw your services as head coach Gumbud, all DIY work has been suspended until my condition or the weather improves, whichever comes first.
till the weather improves? the weather never improves in UK neither the social classes; general manners of the population ; politics in general and the effin house of lords!
don’t string me that one -physios never found a good one in my life;-) and as for takin advice from the ladies forget about it they couldn’t give the correct advice to a caterpillar!
Evening Meg. After yesterdays attempt it steadily got worse as the day progressed, but it could have been just stiffness due to the long period of inactivity, however, this morning it appeared to be pain free and has remained so all today. I will try another walk/run tomorrow and see if it builds up again.
Sorry to hear about your leg Meg, sounds like you are doing the right thing by relieving any swelling with the Ice directly after exercise. I’ve been reading about Turmeric and it’s ability to reduce inflammation, especially from arthritic problems possibly brought on by the cold especially in my case. The results are quite astounding…
Will do Meg.
Have you tried a low dose Ibuprofen [200 mg] just a couple of times a day for the short term. They worked wonders on me but I don’t take them for too long.
Fantastic walk/Jog this morning, perfect conditions and although the last couple of miles on the lane were a bit muddy there was always somewhere dry to put my feet, so managed to keep my shoes reasonably clean…
After jogging some long stretches it was only on the last mile that I had to walk. Hope you managed to get out too Meg…
The reason why I suggested Ibuprofen Meg was because injuries tend to heal faster if you can reduce the inflammation, which can only be done by using a NSAID or Ice…
Paracetamol only relieves the pain and does mask how serious the injury is like you described…:-(:-(
Get well soon Meg…
I admire your spirit Swim, you are going the right way to turn yourself into a Lean, Mean fitness machine and look forward to hearing about your progress. That’s what I do, build exercising into your daily routine and after a while you get to miss it if you don’t do it. Good luck Swim…
PS:- Nice to hear that you have taught you son to look after himself…
I managed to get out even if I am dying Chloe has to go for a walk whatever happens she won’t pee in the garden I trained her that way.
The ice and massage seem to be working, the last two night I have been able to sleep better . I am afraid I can’t take Ibuprofen at the moment, the paracetamol at least reduced to pain so I could get to sleep.
Take it carefully Bob and I am sure you will soon be back to your usual self.
I slept in this morning, I normally rise between 6:30 and 7:00am but it was almost eight before I reluctantly climbed from beneath the duvet and still felt half asleep. Although I don’t normally exercise on a Wednesday I decided the best way to banish those lethargic feelings was to go out for a walk, or a jog if I can manage it. I left the house for a short three mile tour along the canal towpath and back along the main road. How refreshing to be out in the gusty wind dressed in only running top and shorts. After an initial warm up of a mile I changed gear into slow jog mode along the canal towpath, the wind buffeted me around but at this slow pace I could manage some quite long stretches.
I don’t know why I did it, but I glanced round and saw a runner gaining ground on me, I knew he would run me down eventually but I couldn’t resist the urge to put up a fight, so I lifted the pace and kept him off for over a mile before he jogged past and bid me a gasping ‘Good Morning’… Soon my friend you won’t find it so easy.
How different the world seems with a change in the weather, same route but from an unusually calm quiet morning yesterday to battling into the teeth of a gale today, but both hugely satisfying in their own way.
I was pleased with this mornings effort and so far my buttock has not progressed from a dull ache, we will see how it contends with tomorrow’s five.
