As it is currently black history month, I thought that for a change, I’d actually read up on matters and increase my (extremely limited) awareness of “Black History”.
Naturally, my fist port of call was the freebie Kindle Unlimited books. The first one I considered was endorsed by Diane Abbott and the reviews suggested that there were several factual errors in it. Hmm, no surprises there then.
So, can anyone else recommend a good place to start to educate myself (and indeed others), especially for free?
You could do some online reading about Queen Sophia Charlotte. The first black queen of Great Britain. Born in 1752. Like our current royal family, she was of German descent.
You could also read up about the Tuskegee fighter pilots. The Red Tails. Who built up an amazing reputation as bomber escorts. But the USAF did not tell anyone they were black pilots, as that they thought would damage moral!
I was wondering if you meant actual ‘Black’ or maybe included off-white natives and immediately thought about Code Talkers of WWII. It is a fascinating subject concerning the use of native languages.

Five years ago George Floyd died, and that seems to have put UK Black History Month firmly on the calendar. I’d never heard of it before that. Now, each year the local council, LBHF, have events celebrating the lives of local black resident and artist associated with the borough. So quite a new thing really, except Wiki says it started in the 70s.
Bob Marley and other reggae artists used to hang out locally back in the day.
