The bathroom itself looks good before and after. I hope it helps your access.

The grip rail you have looks a bit slippy and hard to grip and it’s better to have more than one. The shower control could have been easier to reach if placed a little lower. Make sure you get a non slip shower mat. It looks as though the door to the bathroom will interfere with any mat you put on the floor. Make sure you put a grip rail somewhere nearby for when you move the mat out of the way.

Good job.

I had a small bath when my kids were young but got rid of it once they were old enough to shower. The shower was made the size of the bath so that in my dotage I could get a chair in there if needed.

Personally I don’t like those hand held shower nozzles and had a fixed shower head installed without any of that water saving nonsense they try to foist upon you. In retrospect I probably should have had both fitted but that is an easy change to make.

My toilet has a little room of its own separate from the bathroom

We managed to get both in here:

My daughter’s house has a similar arrangement but the bath is just a waste of space, who wants to lie in their own dirty water?

Many people had bath tubs before they had showers. My sister still does but she is 80 years old and crippled so she has to use the bath tup.

A lot of older people like to have a bath because it relieves arthritic pain so I’m told. I was reading about bath benefits recently after seeing a health documentary which I think was about the effects of water on our bodies. The presenter did a number of experiments including high impact exercising after ice baths and hot baths and they then measured body vitals etc.

Bathing apparently has a number of health benefits, both psychological (soothes depression and improves brain power) and related to the heart/blood pressure, but surprisingly digestive health too, including improving management of diabetes sugar spikes.

It’s a shame that as we become less mobile later in life it’s so difficult to get into and out a bath. Those bath lifts take up so much room that you’d need a really deep tub to make them worthwhile. I think that bathroom designers should have to make all bath designs user friendly for both the old and young. It’s so much more difficult to have to adapt a bathroom once it’s all in place.

I had trouble myself back in 2020-2022 after having long-Covid. There was a day when I actually thought I would be stuck in the bath! Somehow I clambered out and luckily my muscles recovered over time, but it really made me understand the importance of planning ahead long term for mobility issues. At one point just bending down to pick something up or walking down the stairs was quite scary.

Its harder to clean ones ass in a shower than a bath, an unfortunate observation  :icon_wink:

Tried wet wipes ?

perhaps time to get a bidet? they are not just for washing your socks

Not good for the environment .

Care to explain?

Wet Wipes in the sewage system, well documented.

that’s true even the ones that say they can be flushed shouldn’t be flushed.

Its just common sense.

The ones we use are disposable in the bog.

This sort of improvement is my plan for the next few years with an aim of making my house still suitable as I get older. So this week I’d new stairs put in as the old ones were ridiculously steep with narrow steps and no hand rail. Already I am noticing the difference coming down the stairs.
The next step is made possible by having a wall knocked down for the new stairs. The route up to the main bathroom is more open so I’ll be able to get a bigger bath put in.
In the meantime, can I applaud the decision to put in a decent size walk in shower. I hate little showers, all that elbow banging. But if you’ve enough hot water at hand then a proper mixer tap with rainfall shower head is better (for me) than the wall mounted water heater.
