Ban ads for polluting large cars, report says

A new campaign called “Badvertising” is demanding an immediate end to adverts for large polluting cars.

It says the government should clamp down on sports utility vehicle (SUV) car adverts in the way it curbed smoking ads.

A car industry spokesperson said modern SUVs are the cleanest in history, and said many can run on batteries.

But a leading academic said sales of big polluting cars will breach UK climate targets, and should be banned.

SUVs now make up more than 4-in-10 new cars sold in UK, while fully electric vehicles account for fewer than two in a hundred.

The authors of the report point out that even electric engines won’t solve all the problems with SUVs.

That’s because they will still pollute the air through particles rubbing off brakes and tyres, and use up carbon-emitting resources to make their heavy batteries.

In urban areas, big SUVs are a particular nuisance, they say. Their report found that 150,000 new cars on the road are too big for a standard UK street parking space.

The authors want to outlaw advertising for cars with average emissions of over 160g CO2/km, and those exceeding 4.8m in length.

Professor Jillian Anable, from the Leeds University Transport Studies Unit, said the government needs to see the big picture on cars - and consider banning large polluting models altogether.

"(Given our CO2 targets) there is a clear trade off to be made: the more we can shrink the size and weight of the cars we drive, the less we will have to restrict how much they are driven.

“We ought to be thinking about not allowing large polluting cars to be sold into the UK market at all.”

She added: “Our research shows an approach where the most polluting cars are phased out from now over the next 10-15 years will be more effective than the government’s proposed ‘cliff-edge’ target date in the future where petrol and diesel cars are suddenly no longer allowed to be sold.”

SUVs are for MUGs - Ban 'em, ban 'em all …… :!:

So I should do away with my Nissan Xtrail 7 seat 1.6cc diesel one then that does 45/50MPG around the houses?

I don’t think so, Better to ban any car over 2.0 cc they are the ones polluting the atmosphere

I’ve never seen any adds for the Land Rovers we use. But ban them, Not on your life, they are well used work horses on the farm, and used off road hauling horse boxes.

Um…
I get better than 60 mph. And 2.2 mph.

It would be far better to only produce sub 1Litre gas engines. Our car is a sub 1L + zero road tax and its serves its designed purpose very well indeed. With modern efficient engine technology, large capacities are not required for a quick getaway or relaxed 70 mph cruising.

So how often do you fill 7 seats in a 2-ton 4x4 car to go round the houses … :?:

I think your Land Rovers will be safe - they’re obviously not “Chelsea Tractors” …

Indeed … my 3-cylinder, 1.0 litre Fiesta Zetec S does 55 mpg while being able to do 0-60 mph in 9 seconds and to reach 125 mph - it is road-tax free (low emission) and insured as a standard Fiesta …

Having just bought an suv I don’t agree…

but what car is it? a 7 seater SUV? I doubt it.

The point I can without being pulled up by the police for overloading. Can you do the same in your vehicle?

Any car can be overloaded … :!:

Mine never is because I prefer the tight roadholding when we’re only two-up …

Here here Primus…Another example of the ‘Save the planet’ species taking the high moral ground, dictating how everybody should live their lives…:009:

But as a matter of fact:- I think all car adverts should be banned; They picture some smug get with a pretty girl on their arm driving like Max Verstappen on some winding country road while the car does everything but mash tea…And it’s usually a Beamer or Audi…Just so ‘Sackless!’ and such a waste of space…

And just for the record; I drive a 2 litre diesel Qashqai, it’s like sh$t off a shovel and can break the sound barrier, uphill, with four passengers and a shed load of luggage…And I don’t give a monkeys how much fuel it uses because I’m helping to support the economy with my £200 road tax and 40 mpg…

Yes I agree foxy, they always show open roads no traffic everyone smiling and happy, but we all know the reality of motoring today, traffic queues frayed tempers, far removed from ad land…

Banning ads for SUV’s ? Not on your life ! Doing so, is the beginning of the “slippery slope” toward banning all ads for motor vehicles. All of us know full well that environmentalists can NEVER, WILL NEVER, be satisfied. Give them and inch, and they will take a mile.

The dictatorship of the ultra-leftists in action. I foresee the day when all internal combustion engines will be illegal.

Think that is an extreme view ? Look at what happened to tobacco smokers. 1st they banned tobacco ads on TV. Then they banned all tobacco ads everywhere. That did not work, so then they started banning smoking on planes. Then they banned smoking at the workplace. Then they banned smoking within 50 feet of a business entrance. Then they banned smoking in all bars. Then they banned smoking in public parks, even when there is no other person within sight. Then they started taxing tobacco to ridiculous heights. In California, there is a government sponsored program named , ‘A tobacco free California’.

So do I … :023:

Good news, indeed … :038:

Be careful what you wish for. The day is coming when airline tickets will be sold based on the WEIGHT of the passenger.

Speaking of weight, since obesity is a major cause of health problems, and obviously a greatly increased cost of health care, it stands to reason that obese people should be charged much, much more for high calorie foods: ice cream, cookies, sodas, butter, potato chips, in fact everything except fresh vegetables.

Why should the country, any country, bear the financial burden of people who can not, refuse to, lose weight and are morbidly obese?

Are you sure you want the government dictating what you can drive, what you can eat and/or how many children you can have ? China has a one child policy. Is your country next ? Do you really want to drive an electric golf cart and lose the freedom of traveling into the mountains ? Hmm??

This statement to rid the planet of internal combustion engines is extremely short sighted. A gas engine can be easily converted to burn hydrogen gas instead of petrol by a very simple adaption and the exhaust emissions are only non polluting water vapour; BUT, there are too many vested interests for this tried and tested method to become widespread.

I have just ordered a humongous SEAT Attica Excellence SUV, designed to run over wokes, climate change activists and the lets ban everything brigade with ease and aplomb
