Aurora Tonight

If your up through the night then have a look out your window, you could be in for a good show. I see the lights often being on the North Coast and I never tire of watching them dance…

For the first time since January 2005, the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center in America has issued a Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch.

It means it could provide one of the best viewing opportunities to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) for the whole of the UK.

A sunspot, an area of high solar activity, 16 times wider than Earth, has a number of solar flares and complex Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) which are currently hurtling towards planet Earth. It’s due to arrive Friday night but may continue to be seen Saturday night too.

Last night was beautiful, I’ve seen many shows of the aurora as I live so far north, but last night was something else.

Absolutely stunning Rox!
It must’ve been quite something to actually be there and take it all in.

It’s actually a bit late for the lights to appear here. Aurora Season in Caithness is usually October to March, with the odd one appearing either side of that.
It must have been one heck of a Solar Storm last night, wonder if it’s anything to do with Global Warming.
I took the pics on my phone but have some more on my camera, will post the best ones later.

We apparently had good displays here in Lowestoft, but I wasn’t able to capture anything. I only popped out of the house briefly around 10pm.

This was why

The severe solar storm created a beautiful aurora, called an aurora australis on our side of the world, this is in Kuruman, Northern Cape.

Aurora Australis.
Ek het dit vanoggend 00:30 afgeneem op Scottburg karavaan kamp. Ongelooflik.

Translation: I took this picture this morning at 00:30 in Scottburg Caravan Park. Incredible.

Not surprisingly we received these photos from Madie at Silver Streams Cottages outside Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg.

These are the southern lights (Aurora australis) which is on display this weekend in the southern hemisphere because of a huge geomagnetic storm this is resulting in some amazing photos all around the world. The northern lights are visible as far south as Florida in the USA at the moment.

I have not seen anything in Johannesburg but I live in a well lit suburb so it would be unlikely that I would witness this beautiful sight. It’s definitely on my bucket list.

Outstanding photos Rox, I was a bit too tired to stay up late but we have all houses on the north side of the house so it would mean a walk up to the end of the road and on to the lane. Might give it a go tonight…Thanks for posting… :+1:

‘Snow Report’?
You get snow in Johannesburg Minx?
:astonished:

Parts of South Africa are accustomed to snow during its winter months, June to August.

It snows in Johannesburg, South Africa once every 5 to 10 years on average.

The last time we had snow in Johannesburg was July 2023.
Prior to that we had snow in 2012 and 2007.

Lovely displays over our area last night apparently - i didn’t see it, but someone recorded it on a time lapse video and posted it on our Facebook town forum page. Really beautiful.

I would like to see it myself tonight, but i need to sleep!

According to The BBC after 22.30 is the time to look out, I might just have to prop open the eyelids with a couple of swan vestas.

We is dead posh here in East Sussex. We actually have light bulbs to light up areas . Not desperate to use natures resources that happen infrequently. Even some of the light bulbs are different colours as well.

Hi, Rox! Outstanding post and what gorgeous images!

We are too far south her to have caught the view, but my elated friends and family in Kansas, who have never seen as much as a green photon, reported that the sky glowed pink for some time. It was an extraordinary event, for sure!
