It looks like it has imploded.
On woman has lost a husband and a son.
Rear adm Mauger says this morning an ROV from the vessel Horizon Artic found the tail cone of the Titan submersible approximately 1600ft from the bow of the Titanic wreck.
And they found additional debris, which is consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber.
There will, of course, be an accident investigation, which will, hopefully, identify the cause of the catastrophe but there will also be some searching questions asked about such potentially hazardous āmissionsā. It may be good business but will the ābusinessā now foot the bill for the huge search and rescue operation and any others which are required? Will the ābusinessā now be subject to litigation in the US civil courts? Will the ābusinessā accept and implement the recommendations of the accident investigation team?
My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the 5 men who have lost their lives in the Titan submersible.
I saw the US Coastguard Press Conference and they confirm there will be ongoing work to try to piece together more details.
I hope the media leave the families in peace to process their shock and grief.
Tragic. No more should go down not just because of this loss, the site should be left alone.
Iāve just watched a special programme on Channel 5, which confirmed the sad news that all five had perished,There was a live broadcast at 8pm from the Coastguard Admiral, relaying the fact, that all were lost. A tragic outcome. R.I.P
This is a dark day! I donāt care about how much money these people had! This is not about wealth-envyā¦itās about bounds and sufficient health/safety measures. There is such a thing, right now, as ātoo farā, out in space. There is such a thing, right now, as ātoo farā in the ocean depths. There should be no more āhappy tripsā that far down in the North Atlantic. The deck of the Titanic must never again be a go-see tourist location!
Yep, the world is not enough.
I feel very sad , just canāt imagine their fears . Awful
Graphic explanation of how they died
They experienced around 2.5 tons per square inch, as that hull imploded - probably the fastest kill, short of explosives!
After the grim discovery of debris from the Titan submersible on the ocean floor, the focus of the rescue efforts will now be turned towards understanding what caused the accident.
To answer the question of why this happened and what could have been done to prevent it, the authorities will be gathering every piece of the debris they can find, according to Ryan Ramsey, former submarine captain in Britainās Royal Navy. āThere is no black box, so you are not going to be able to track the last movements of the vessel itself,ā he says, but otherwise the process of investigation is not dissimilar to that of an airplane crash.
Once investigators bring the pieces back up to the surface, they will look for the break structure in the carbon fibre structure, which is key to helping them understand what happened in those last moments, he says. Each piece will be closely examined under a microscope to examine the direction of the carbon fibre filaments, looking for tears which suggest the exact place where the rupture happened.
The big question investigators will be trying to answer is whether the cause was a structural failure. The critical question is if this did happen, is whether it was because of a lack of proper testing, as some experts have suggested.
It is unclear at this stage which agency will lead the investigation as there is no protocol for such incidents with a submersible. Admiral Mauger said that it was particularly complex because the incident took place in a remote part of the ocean involving people of many different nationalities. But since the US coastguard has played a leading role in the operation so far, it is likely to continue to play an important part.
The investigation will, no doubt, take months, even years.
I was trying to show how instantaneous the deaths would be. If you donāt like it, delete it. Changing it would make the post pointless. Delete it.
At about 4 minutes in, this oceanographer is guessing that the sub had been weakened from previous expeditions much like planes get weakened after many flights. Heās speculating that the owners didnāt take into account the metal fatigue of previous dives.
Makes sense since the owners probably thought that the sub worked before so it would work again but the pressure on the metal from being underwater weakens it. Since thereās not much experience with being underwater, they may not have calculated the extent of the metal fatigue.
So no end of adventure tourism.
. . . both underwater and outer space. Some peopleās curiosity is insatiable.
I think this will be the end of titanic tourism .
The only merciful thing is death came quickly and unexpectedly not the drawn out agony that it could have been .
no Muddy your right the agony is for those left behind
one journalist was asking if they might try to recover the bodies
i guess the pressure at that depth might crush the bodies into miniscule parts
death would have come quicker than a balloon bursting
i only hope it happened on the way down rather than several days later
Hi
We cannot legislate for every contingency, some people just like taking risks.
