So, does that mean they think its cheaper hiring a few extra people to man the tills, then keep up with the losses of shoplifters? It would have been better if they had spun it to make it about the customer experience, rather than revenue protection. Way to go Asda.
The self-service tills in Sansburyās and M&S Food are always poorly attended, but the personal service tills are still as popular as ever. Tesco is about the same and the last time I was in Morrisons, the two self-service tills were covered over and roped off.
We the public are not on their payroll so why should their job for themš
We get our groceries delivered to our door. No tills required.
Where I live, the self-service tills at M&S are very popular and they always have a member of staff on duty to quickly sort out any issues or authorise alcohol purchases. Even with a small trolley full of stuff, I find it is usually easier, quicker and pleasanter to go through the Self Service Tills, rather than to queue for the couple of staffed conveyor belt- type tills, where folk often queue up.
Asda is another story - their self-service tills in my local store are OK for one or two items but if I have alcohol items that need āauthorisingā, I wouldnāt use the Self-Service Tills - it takes the Staff ages to respond to Self-Service Till alerts - is quicker to use the staffed tills - there is rarely a queue for the one staffed till that is open in my local Asda.
Tesco is a bit more of a āsuck it and seeā experience - the Staff are always pleasant but some are quicker than others, both on the Manual tills and as guardians of the self-service tills.
Sainsburyās have so many staffed manual tills that I have always used them on the occasional shopping trips in that store. I canāt say Iāve ever noticed their āself-serviceā section cos they always have plenty of manual tills open without queues.
Iām not really a fan of self service checkouts. I prefer to hang back and be served by someone. The human touch cannot be automated, and a smile with a āhow are you?ā goes a long way
Oh Iām having to do that at the moment. Iām not liking it nowā¦too many substitutions Do you get that?
I donāt have a Tesco near me, but I recently went to Aldi for the first time in a whileā¦gosh they scan a bit quick donāt they?!
I canāt give an opinion on Aldi because there isnāt an Aldi store in my town - but I often buy a few things in LIDL and their checkout staff are very speedy too!
I usually only have just enough time to chuck all my shopping back into the basket, then retreat to the packing counter at the edge of the shop to pack it neatly into my shopping bags.
It feels like some kind of āsupermarket raceā challenge!
I wouldnāt use Asda if Holly Willoughby was manning the tillā¦ Well perhaps if it was Hollyā¦
But I use the hand scanners at Tesco, scan yer shopping into a box and take the box out of trolley into boot (no! not that Boot, sorry boot) The staff are very friendly and always good for a natterā¦A bit worrying when you get selected for a check, but fortunately it doesnāt happen very often. Not that I would knowingly nick stuff but doubt creeps in that you missed somethingā¦
Ah, well, Weāre alright up in my corner of Godās own country - Holly Willoughby does not work in our small Asda store - or in any other supermarket around here - the supermarkets where I live tend to employ folk who may struggle to get employment in a fast-paced environment - or in a TV Studio. Iām very happy with their service.
For most if not all of the year, the younger shopper stays away from M&S with the average age seen in the food hall will be from around the late 50ās right up to can just about walk, or at least that is my observation when I visit. The older shopper will not use self-service and almost demands personal service tills. They will not wait if the queues are too long either and will abandon their full trolley to go somewhere else if an unopened till is not staffed quickly.
I would not patronise ASDA full stop. Their meat is just not of a high enough quality for my requirements and the last one I briefly visited was too noisy and needed a thorough deep clean.
We donāt have an Asda up here but I wish Tesco would put more tills on.
You are lucky Boot, our 2 Asdaās are the size of small African countries, very cold and could be mistaken for the builders yard at B&Q if it were not for the robust āladiesā (I use the term loosely) with trolleys full of Lager, Coca Cola, crisps and ready meals, and three kids either clinging to the trolley or chasing each other up and down the islesā¦
Not a lot and, when there, there usually alternatives. Maybe we are just lucky.
My local M&S Food is in Westfield London. Itās pretty big but has few customer buying a trollyful. Vast majority just a handful, so self-service tills are favourite.
I donāt know if they have this where you are, but where I shop, you can request no substitutions on an online order but itās not a default, and you have to go looking for the option.
Being a vegan, I canāt afford substitutions. They would never get it right.
Last week we completely messed up the scan system in Tesco. Been using it successfully for few months and been checked a couple of times and thankfully spot on.
Last week my son was with me. We had a trolley and scanner each. Halfway round and getting bored I picked up Tomato Puree ad it wouldnāt scan. Son scanned it on his and without thinking I tossed it in my trolley. At the checkout area he went through no prob. I was stopped but she couldnāt say why so the whole weekly shop had to be scanned. It then dawned on me what the prob might be so I explained and son showed her receipt. Wonāt make that mistake again.
I know how you must have felt Rose, even though I am sure that I havenāt missed anything, I always feel nervous when they do a recheckā¦Just shoot me nowā¦
