How? It was made of Liquorice
One boot, from the 12 pairs made for the scene is still at the Farm/Factory where they were made,
The boot was made by the firm of Hillaby’s in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, England.
Chaplin was hospitalised after eating the boot.
Insulin shock.
Liquorice is made from extracts from the root of the Liquorice Plant
As an aside, The Goldrush has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

You used to be able to buy liquorice root in my school tuck shop, it was just like chewing a sweet stick, the woody remains were just thrown away but as I recall there was a slight bitter after taste.

Despite this, for years I thought liquorice was actually made from molasses. Totally wrong!
