I’ve never read it and was wondering whether to bother. I could do with something racy in my life. Rigor mortis is setting in this winter it’s so dismal and dark … and grey.
I downloaded the kindle sample and after a few pages I was bored.
Good idea to check with your medical practitioner before you embark on this risky venture.
I read it when it came out. I have a funny story about why I read it. There’s me in Tesco back in 2011 looking for a new book to read on the train. I found this enigmatic and intriguing book which appeared to be high in the top ten. It’s cover didn’t give much away. I honestly thought it was a psychological thriller or some sort of murder mystery! It wasn’t until I was sitting on the train and started blushing that I realised it was not all it seemed!
As it was written by the author on her mobile phone on a train originally as fan fiction for the Twilight saga, (which in itself is written as fan fiction for several classics), it’s not exactly high end literature. But as the story line is based on these classics it is in some senses a good story.
It’s an interesting twist on Twilight. Which is in itself I think a product of Meyer’s own take on attitudes to Mormons. Meyer has also written sci fi novel “the Host”, which I thought was rather good. Again that novel struck me as being her way to represent the Mormon culture.
Fun fact - Meyer’s husband’s first name is Christian. As per Mr Grey.
It has its own Wikipedia page, some women love it. My ex made me read it but it is actually a well written erotic novel.
I didn’t realise the author was actually known, I read it in the 1970s when there was a great deal of mystery about who wrote it - Pauline Réage was known to be a pen name and whether it was even a male or female was not known at the time. As I say it was my ex wife’s favourite book.
Thanks for your excellent appraisal Annie, I shall conceal a copy in my shopping (bad for my image) the next time I visit Waterstones…
Merry Christmas Annie…xx
@AnnieS … I’m tempted … at 9 quid for the boxed set of the three books … ‘Shades of Grey’ .
I read the sample you can download but found it unexciting …perhaps because there’s no pictures, I always did prefer comics.
@Bruce … Never heard of this one but I’ve found Story of O on Amazon and can download that too. There’s two books. Hmm … one review says it’s better that 50 shades.
But am I worldly-wise enough to read it …
Reviews …
The depraved acts committed upon the protaganist are written in such a matter of fact way, you’re left feeling speechless.
I think it’s only fair to say that the beginning is very erotic and it certainly refreshes the ‘parts’ other novels cannot reach! And when I attempted to retell the tale to my husband - it refreshed his parts too!!
by the time I finished, I dropped my Kindle on my lap and thought ‘Wow. That was weird!’
