Any other musicians or former musicians here?

I have been a singer and songwriter since 10 years ago. Does anyone else make their own songs? Play a musical instrument? Or write songs? I’m curious.

I played violin and guitar. Some of that was for Scottish dance music.

@okfirstofall Yes, this somewhat old ex band leader of the 60’s into the late 70’s still plays to some extent.
A lifetime ago I ran a part-time band and now due to the others going before me, at 86 (40yrs older that you ), I am the last one remaining. I gave up wind instruments approx 16 yrs ago due to the inability to fully breath properly following a nasty infection that almost claimed me. Now I content myself via an occasional indulgence with guitars and my latest acquisition, my fantastic and somewhat expensive Genos 2 (with expansion packs) from Yamaha, or as my wife describes it, a full orchestra at my fingertips when played through my stacks :+1:

What is Yamaha’s Genos 2? Well Jessica Ann, the link below will take you to the right page :+1:

How wonderful! What sort of songs do you write/sing?

I’m a self taught guitarist from childhood. My father remarried to a gifted musician who taught me piano at an early age. I never really liked it but was require to practice, and I learned the very basics of music theory. I really don’t remember but somehow there was a old beat up second hand guitar laying around at our home. I shared a room with my step brother, a gifted drummer and vocalist. So the exposure was always there. So what I learned was from osmosis, and the love of music. Anyway, by high school I became heavily involved in team sports and lets just say social activities. I seemed to suit me better and was a lot of fun. In college I picked it up again but just for fun, but chose to study art. Spent a lot of time in the studio, but I enjoyed traveling with my buddies’ band and helping out with all that goes with that. My pals were out of my league musically. They would play gigs in college town bars, so tagged along and did a lot of the heavy work. Then I guess you could say I grew up. Becoming a father will do that, right? Went back to school and finished with a master’s degree in art education. For fun I started writing lyrics for simple children songs. Very folkish, simple chord progressions, and silly lyrics. Writing the lyrics was fun, and I’d let them contribute to the lyrics which they enjoyed. I’d play for school events sometimes but never really felt comfortable in front of a large crowd. Played with a local band for a few shows, but it felt like work learning so many different songs. That didn’t come easy for a self taught musician playing other peoples songs…much too serious and nerve racking. So I limited it to sitting on the porch around with good friends who love to sing old familiar radio songs. Once retired, I bought and plugged in a Strat. Haven’t put it down since. I approach it like my paintings. Slow and easy. I play for my own peace of mind…no lyrics, no judgement, just chasin’ butterflies.
Mmm…never told that story… like talkin’ to myself…well’ thinkin’ to myself. Do it all the time, lol!
