Any book ideas

We are doing our usual home made Christmas but want to add some books to Gracie’s presents, trouble is her teacher tells us she is reading at 15 year old level ! I’ve been looking at books for 15 year olds but the content isn’t really suitable for a 9 year old, so I’m struggling.

If anyone has any ideas I’d really appreciate them as she is an avid reader and I want to keep her interested in books not let her get bored.

My husband isn’t a great reader I think if he’s read one book in 30 years I’d be very surprised so he’s no help at all :!:

She loves who dunnits and anything about horses or dogs.

I honestly think if you as a family can talk openly and honestly , The Hunger Games are fantastic books for that age , with that maturity

That’s a good one I read it and there wasn’t anything I’d not talk to her about in them.

I was wondering about recommending them because of the theme of the games.

I’m handing mine over to my grandson soon. He’s a tad sensitive still so will wait another year

Do you think Grace would like the Harry Potter books, Julie?

My granddaughter read the whole set of them when she was almost 10.

When I was that age I read many of the books by Enid Blyton, an Englishwoman. I don’t know if they are still in print but your local library should be able to help. All of Enid Blyton’s books center on young teenagers having thrilling mysteries and adventures.
Miss Blyton, single-handedly, set my feet upon a life-long journey of travel and exploration.

Might the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis interest her?

Or the Jacqueline Wilson books?

The Enid Blyton Famous Five books seem to be making a come back as well.

Yes Bakerman, the bookshops still stock Enid Blyton books here. I used to love her books in my childhood days

I was going to suggest Jacqueline Wilson too.

Dustbin baby is a brilliant book for teens. I’m sure Grace wold enjoy reading it.

Anything by Michael Murpurgo.

Have a look at some of the books by Katrina Kahler - she writes books specifically for girls (am I allowed to use that word now ; ). Her Supergirl and Julia Jones’ Diary books were a favourite of my great niece.

Some good ideas there for me to look at. I’m not afraid of books and toys for different genders as long as the opposite gender are allowed to use them too, I had a male cousin loved my sindy doll as a child but he wasn’t allowed one of his own, that always made me sad, he grew up still wanting his own sindy doll !

Ditto!! Absolutely anything and everything ever written by Michael Morpurgo!

And Lord of the Rings trilogy

Start with The Hobbit

I must admit I’m more than a bit out of touch with children’s and teenager’s books, but how about Arthur Ransome - Swallows and Amazons, and so on
Or are they considered a bit too outdated now?

My daughter enjoyed historical novels, but the only one I can remember is Mist Over Pendle

She read swallows and amazons a while ago and enjoyed it in a historical sort of way, could quite get her head around parents allowing children to go off on their own like that. Same happened with famous five books she liked them but it was like a different world to her.

As you have implied that she is quite capable for her age, how about something practical

Hi

The Terry Pratchett young adult ones are good.

That is to say I am reading one now.

Thinking back I loved Enid Blyton, The Secret Seven , Mallory Towers, St Claire’s , The famous Five

I also loved Heidi, Ballet Shoes, The little Princess, Anna of Green gables. So yes old classics but still readable

What about 'Wonder" by R J Palacio. It’s just wonderful, I really enjoyed it and so did my teenagers.

I’ll look into them all but not the more practical ones as she isn’t able to ride a bike yet with her weak left side from her stroke a while ago. So it’s not really fair to put things out there she won’t be able to use really. Obviously if she showed an interest we’d do it but she isn’t really interested in what she can’t do more about what she can do well and what’s going to be possible next. Horses etc she’s just learning about because next summer she is going to take a course at a local stable for disabled kids.
