An Incredible film

A few days ago I watched a film named “Another Mother’s Son”. Set in Jersey during the WW2 German occupation. It is a true story about a remarkable woman - Louisa Gould - played by Jenny Seagrove. She took in and sheltered a young Russian POW who had escaped from the Germans while working in a quarry. She taught him English, managed to obtain ID papers for him, referred to him as her nephew, Bill, and kept him safe for almost two years with the help of her brother, Harold, played by Ronan Keating. Unfortunately they were betrayed - Louisa ended up in the gas chamber at Ravensbruck, and Harold was sent to Belson. He was one of only two Brits that survived there.

The script/screenplay was written by Louisa’s great neice, Jenny Lecoat, and is both heart rending and humourous. Filmed in 2017, it is full of historical information that I, for one, had not previously known about how things really were on Jersey at that time . Well worth watching.

At the end of the film there are several interviews with members of the excellent cast and with Jenny Lecoat - I found these extremely interesting and insightful. It is a film that will live with me for a long time

Was the film taken from a book of the same title? I’d like to read a copy is there was such a book.

I don’t think so, Longdriver. The writer - Jenny Lecoat - said she felt the story had to be told - and wrote the script. Maybe in time she will publish it as a book - it is one I would love to read.

There is a book by that name @LongDriver but it’s unrelated to the film. There are books available if you look at the reference section of Wiki

I watched this a while ago @SilverTabby, and was so moved by it. What a truly courageous person she was, but such a heartbreaking outcome.

Thanks for that. I had never heard of Louisa Gould, or heard her story.

A few years ago I found a couple of books about Jersey during WW2 at a local carboot sale. One was Lest We Forget- Escapes and Attempted Escapes from Jersey during the German Occupation 1940-1945.

Jersey has a fascinating WW2 history.

Seen that one as well but - although it is a good film - it did not affect me in the same way.

Thanks for this, I will look for it.

Someone mentioned the Potato Pie film, I actually enjoyed the book that film was made from. It was in the form of a diary, a book form that I don’t usually like and I almost didn’t start it but I am glad I did.

Edit:

Not available in Australia on Netflix. I will try to download it

And I saw the Potato Pie film not so long ago (Netflix or iPlayer) … quite delightful.

Can’t find it on Netflix nor Amazon.

My DVD came from Amazon and is still available there - also you can watch it on on Prime.
