Personally, i would never have used the word “cleverer”, but i do think English humour is very different to USA humour.
I never reallt ‘get’ American humour in their comedies, just as they don’t get ours, but it doesnt make either country cleverer than the other, just different.
Nowt wrong with that.
I was brought up on Bilko and Lucille Ball.Loved Bilko.
I think us Brits prefer our comedy heroes to be losers. The Americans come close with Frasier, perhaps that’s why I like it so much.
I don’t get some of the America humour like Friends, I never really understood the hype about that but years ago I used to watch Married With Children and I found that absolutely hilarious, the family were just so funny both parents and the two kids.
Lucille Ball was brilliant
I used to watch that one too … a great laugh.
I agree. We are two different countries. Just as one which speaks English and the other a debased form of the language (!), we both have quite different forms of humour.
I have tried, but I really can’t find anything to laugh at when watching an American comedy programme…
with ONE exception: The Simpsons.
I don’t know exactly why it is, but I find that programme really very funny indeed, and also quite clever - so much so that I have nicked one of the characters to form my avatar!
Oh, JBR, you shouldn’t look down on England because they have so many dialects for such a small country.
Oi! We were here first!
She’s just yanking your chain JBR … she doesn’t like Brits.
Morty, I want you to know Brits are some of my favorite people! I make calls to England every week to keep in touch with friends. Why, a close friend of mine here in the states was born in England. Every country has good and bad, friendly and ugly pusses, that’s the fun of enjoying a group like this. It’s the person and his/her personality and outlook on life that makes one desirable for friendship. xx
An astute observation you are right .
Blimey.I’m going to frame that reply. Thanks
Not all to my taste but very popular in the UK:Dick Van Dyke,Mary Tyler Moore,Roseanne,Rhoda,Beverly Hillbillies,The Addams Family,The Munsters,Taxi,Mash,Cheers,Seinfeld, The Big Bang Theory …and there’s probably more.
I used to love MASH
Also Taxi was a good one also loved Bewitched. I love Lucy was hilarious. Mork and Mindy? Who didn’t love Robin Williams.
Ok,so I was a child at the time. I can’t think of anything recent.
How did I forget Elizabeth Montgomery!
I’m good with both British and American humour.
I think I was lucky in that I was born and bred in NZ of Scottish and English parents, and now live in Canada. So got to listen to all of it.
Having said that, British humour has always topped American for me, though the US has come out with some pretty decent shows in the past, as mentioned above. Now they’re mostly rubbish.
Now don’t go getting big heads, but my very Canadian husband prefers British humour also. But maybe his dad being Welsh has something to do with that!
Anyways, that’s not really addressing the thread topic “Americans are clever”.
Some definitely are!
Just like some Canadians are. And are not.
And some Brits too!
Lovemyboys that’s an interesting combination NZ/Canada as both nations nationals can sometimes take umbrage at being mistaken for their Australian/US respective neighbours!
Canadians I have known have also had a thing about their wacky offbeat sense of humour. By a thing I mean it’s a discussion topic and I have had this discussion with more than one Canadian! I once went on holiday with some Canadians and they thought themselves to have a British culture. Whereas here we think of Canadians as having a more American culture.
Oh, don’t worry Morty. I have relatives on my mother’s side in America, but they are in the far more civilised New England (Rhode Island and New Hampshire to be precise).
We simply took what we had to work with and made it better!
Careful Dinosaurs can make the same claim…oh wait.
OMG
Al Bundy
Archie Bunker
Parks and Rec
Taxi
Friends
Hell I could go on for hours. Most US TV Sitcoms are about losers.
