Amazon activists mourn death of ‘man of the hole’, last of his tribe

It’s a curious trait of our species for one group to uproot another for its own needs, and to lose the skills, knowledge, experience of the displaced group/tribes.

It’s such a terrible story, so full of pathos. That poor man had been part of a tribe, living a social existence, working together to maintain their way of life. It is tragic that their fellow humans (if we can call them that) let greed rule them and destroy these people - probably a people who had no concept of greed themselves.

And that Japanese fellow, another tragic story, his life ruined by people who forced him to give up his wonderful way of life because they thought he couldn’t take care of himself. Appalling, truly heartbreaking.

@Morticia mentions the similarity to the Native American Indians, and it reminded me of a book I read recently, which was just so fascinating. The Peacekeeper, by B.L. Blanchard, imagines a North America which was never colonised, but rather it has developed, and kept apace with other nations, peopled entirely by its native Americans. But while keeping up with general world progress, the people have maintained their unique culture, and language. I can’t recommend it highly enough - it’s different from anything else I’ve read, and I didn’t want it to end!

I love everything to do with Anthropology. I’ll let you know how I get on with it. I probably won’t get it until next week sometimes due to the postal strikes though.

seems there’s half the world bent on modernization and the other half left behind and forgotten and wot about the mountain peoples -still there I believe living off their goats milk!

And I bet the ‘forgotten’ ones are a sight happier and less stressed than the rest of us.

Tibetans and Nepalese? Yes they are still living as their ancestors did. I follow a few Youtube channels on that subject. I love indiginous life stories!

they have lovely ‘ghosts’ too that you can play - oops pray with !

America is well worth looking at. I recall reading something about several million native Americans being killed/displaced over the centuries, and will try to source this.

In the meantime, the Indian Removal Act of 1830 is known to have an estimated 60000 moved along by one means or another.

…disgusting …ditto Oz

And we’ve not even bothered to consider the destruction of other species, which is worth noting even if it is beyond the scope of this thread.

Estimated as tens of millions.
