So I have a bee in my bonnet, or rather a beehive. I keep coming across this everywhere in our society these days. A lack of accountability. Accountability is about being answerable for your actions, being able to accept the blame is yours when things go wrong.
When did we stop holding organisations and services to account? It seems that these days we just accept that organisations will fob you off and that it’s not even worth trying to hold them to account.
That’s not my view. I think this is a time when organisations should be held to account and they should be answerable more than ever before. Rules are being broken, liberties are being taken, nobody wants to be questioned on anything they do. There seems to be an assumption that the public should not challenge the status quo, a status quo that reeks of ineptitude and provides rubbish instead of professionalism.
Is it just me? How do you feel about the level of accountability those we most trust with services we access?

Not sure what you’re driving at, Annie.Consumers, ordinary citizens, unless they are activists and part of certain organisations opposing those (social) wrongs, can hardly do that, can they? A concrete example of what it was like in the old days would have been nice.
We have boards of enquiry, investigative media, consumer protection organisations , and above all, the courts, all of which hold those organisations and services accountable. What precisely has gone missing?
It is rather ironic that the other overused word that has become meaningless is … ‘transparency’.
Nor have we ever had so much legislation and bureaucratic red tape designed to avoid the need for accountability.
It pays to be cynical and then you’re not disappointed.
The ombudsman in the UK has limited ability to resolve complaints. It’s there to oversee a process is carried out correctly, but doesn’t hold organisations accountable for mistakes.
I’m up for taking to the streets in order to protest!
But what does a revolution entail? Anarchists and extremists at the helm, no thank you very much!
Exactly, the pressure to hold to account comes from within. Too few people accept rubbish and don’t complain. If they do complain they do not pursue a poor complaints response. Fobbing off is the order of the day for many organisations.
I do recall a speaker in Hyde Park in the late 60s extolling the virtues of the “Anarchist Party” until he was shouted down as being totally absurd. I can’t seeing the idea making a comeback.
