I am separated from my wife but we have stayed on good terms and phone each other regularly. She kept the dog
He’s had arthritis for a while; this afternoon she phoned to let me know that he had got worse quite quickly over the past week and could hardly walk, so sadly but inevitably he was put down
We know when we get a dog that they don’t live very long, but it’s still sad
He was a German Wire Haired Pointer; we kept the name the breeder gave him - Zulu
He was 12 in December 2021
That breed have a shortish life span, typically 10 to 11 years, so he did OK
They were originally bred as a working gun dog, but Zulu was kept as a pet, so he had an easy life
A few years ago I got talking to a vet, and he said that about 80% of dog owners cry when their dog dies…
Such a sad time for you . They are wonderful companions arnt they . Love has no weight and has no measure love is love and it hurts when we lose them .
Been there many many times they are part of the family. We used to give our dogs Metacam which helped our dogs when they became arthritic and had trouble walking
So sorry to read this @zuludog. They are part of the family, our dogs, aren’t they? It is so very hard when they go. My daughter’s dog, a black labrador, is nearly 14 and her arthritis is pretty bad, but it hasn’t stopped her from walking yet. She has Golden Paste every day -main ingredient is turmeric powder, which has good anti-inflammatory properties.
Sorry to hear about your dog Zulu, we lost Maddie the cat last year and we were gutted. I still get a lump in my throat thinking about her…One very special animal…
Oh zuludog, l hope you’re ok. It’s the saddest time when you lose your dog as they bring you so much joy and are so loyal.
I hope your sadness will soon subside and not be so hard to bear. Then you can think about the fun and happy times you had with your faithful boy, Zulu.
Aahhh, so sad. Been there several times with our dogs but it is part and parcel of owning a dog. You know it had the best life and you are allowing it to leave this life with as little pain as possible.
We are now in a similar position with our horse. She is arthritic but on painkillers and still wandering about nd eating well. The day will come soon when we have to make that decision.
