25 Years Ago Today

It was 25 years ago that the “Best Olympics Ever” started in Sydney. The good thing about it was that it was held at reasonable times rather than in the middle if the night. :icon_wink:

Even I watched the lovely Cathy Freeman win the 200 metres.

The worse thing was that daylight savings started in September and led to the adoption of 6 months of Daylight Savings (absolute hell), however the trains ran on time and all was happy.

We survived the Y2K bug but nothing has happened since.

Cathy Freeman won the 400metres not 200. My mistake.

There was the close shave with the Mayans 2012!!!

The year 2000…A very poor year for me I’m afraid. Running was fraught with injury and poor performance runs, I barely made 900 miles for the end of year tally (it’s usually over 1000 miles)
I purchased a packet of cigarettes after stopping for six months.
My best friend left his wife and his job…We hardly ever socialised or ran together after that.
I was made redundant after six years as a toolmaker at a large kitchen manufacturer…
My Dad was rushed into hospital after suffering a stroke…
Concorde crashed just outside Paris, killing over 100 people…
Farmers and Lorry drivers boycotted the refineries over the high price of fuel. As a result petrol stations ran out of petrol and supermarket shelves were empty…
After one of the hottest years on record, in November we had the worst floods in living memory in Stamford Bridge and York. Doncaster was badly hit also with the river Don bursting it’s banks…
I was admitted to hospital to have varicose veins removed from my left leg and in December I signed on at the dole office for the first time in my life…
So all in all, not one of my best years… :009:
We did win the first gold medal in the Olympics for cycling…
:+1:

We still had our own currency, the Lira, until the Euro was imposed on us later in 2002, and caused havoc!

I was a young 65 year old and still gainfully employed.

Where did it all go wrong

The employment bit.

25 years ago today…“Sergeant Pepper learnt the band to play”

Maybe there really was a millennium bug, if you consider how much the world has changed for the worst, since 2000.

Funnily enough I saw in the new year 1999/2000 in Sydney - first trip to Australia. Loved it - after Sydney did Adelaide, gold coast and Cairns. Been back since but that first trip was memorable.

2000 was when we moved to the bungalow we’re in now. Lots of work wanted doing. I wasn’t all that keen on buying it but a fairly level site had to be considered for wheelchair access and there wasn’t much like that around. I could see the potential and have done the place up over the years. We wouldn’t want to live anywhere else now.

I was 55 years old and cycling about 15 miles 3 times a week. My brother (R.I.P.) was doing the same. The children and grandchildren were young and times were lively. What a difference 25 years can make.
