Lizards are some of the oldest reptiles on Earth, having slithered or rather, scampered through history for over 200 million years!
They belong to the order Squamata, which also includes snakes.
There are over 7,000 species of lizards, ranging from the tiny dwarf gecko (smaller than a paperclip) to the formidable Komodo dragon (which can grow up to 10 feet long!).
These ancient reptiles evolved alongside dinosaurs but managed to survive mass extinctions, climate changes, and shifting continents.
Lizards are found on every continent except Antarctica and continue to amaze scientists with their adaptability and survival tactics. Monitor Lizard
Ah, thanks for a wonderful post! I happen to enjoy lizards of most kinds. When my grandson was very small, my vacations to Florida included finding lizards around his house, pool, and trees. He kept them in little cages only for a day, then set them loose again. A trip down memory lane for me…again, thank you!
I think the ones we have here are the Podarcis Muralis, also known as wall lizards, if I’m not mistaken? It’s nearly dark outside now, so they won’t be around, I’ll try and take a picture tomorrow, if I’m fast enough!
I’m sorry if there are any lizard lovers here but I just cannot tolerate them, they leave their little excrements on our ground floor window-sills and they break our mosquito screens, they’re full of holes now and I’ve had to stick cellotape to cover them but they look terrible! I will eventually have to get them replaced!
