Why are peanuts called Goobers in the US?

Such a strange name. Are Goobers peanuts that grow in the ground?

“Goobers” are indeed a synonym for “peanuts.” I have rarely heard the word but never use it and think it has mostly gone out of common use. I had to look it up, and it seems that “goober” is a spin-off of a word from east Africa, that made it’s way here with the slaves when peanuts were a bigger crop than they are today.

Never heard peanuts being referred to a goober. I heard people say “he’s a goober”. I never connected it to peanuts.
There is a chocolate covered peanut that’s called goober. Smucker has peanut butter and jelly in a jar called goobers.

This brought back memories of watching a SpongeBob film (many times) with my son when he was little.
There was indeed a Goofy Goober character, it kind of fits into place now…

We used to call unshelled peanuts “monkey nuts”

I used to love eating them straight from the “shell”
