Who agrees, Magpies are Hypocrites!?

they are friendly enough here too - until nesting time when they start swooping

I know it is only to protect their nests - but very unpleasant when you are walking through a park or suchlike and get swooped

We have lots of those around here in Spring and Summer. We call them “gazza ladra” - “thieving magpie” - as they have a reputation for stealing shiny objects and hiding them, and also for stealing other birds’ eggs :astonished:. They make a mess in gardens too, disturbing flowers and plants. :slightly_frowning_face:

Australian Magpies are different to the Europeans.Named because they are black and white but are a different thing. They have a very pleasant song and can be good mimics.

We have a family of a Magpies living here in one of the trees, they are very clever birds and quick to learn.
I use a feeding station to feed the small birds and one Magpie used to grab the seed feeder in it’s beak and lift it off the hook. It fell to the ground and the magpie family fed. I put a very small metal keyring on the feeder handle and hook it onto the station arm by that, the big magpie can’t get it off anymore and it was not happy. It looked sad and I felt sorry for them so I bought a ground feeder for bigger birds and fill it every day in the Winter months. Problems solved everyone’s happy and eating well…In peace no wee birds being chased off or hassled.

I was about to point out the same thing, they are not related to the European Magpie at all but are related to Butcherbirds and Currawongs. I am pretty sure they are much bigger than European Magpies.
