I used to - but only because Orange had a special deal where the monthly fee was free and you only paid for calls

I have done in the past, just the cheapest of the cheap from Argos loaded with a ten pound voucher. Usually when out camping, fishing etc.

My mobile unlimited line is with Tesco, but it is via a relative who is employed by Tesco and all I know is the service I use is quoted as being provided by ‘Tesco and its Affiliates’
I could be wrong, but I think she pays £6 monthly for her grandfather’s unlimited line. Even when out and about, I’ve never run out of data which seem to be running constantly 24/7, but my knowledge about modern phones is almost nothing.

My knowledge of phones is not great, but I think you can have Mobile Data switched on 24/7, but only use data when actually browsing. Also your phone should automatically switch to WiFi when in reach of a hotspot.

Ah, okay. At least half of my day is spent at home and that means my WiFi would provide the data connection for that period of time.

You just get an O2 chip, and put in your phone.
Top up by phone,as and when, as little or as much.
You also get offers and rewards , for example, extra minutes and cash back and the 02 Priority App with its free offers.
I have an iPhone but it works in any.
Calls ard texts abroad are same cheap price as at home to make, free to receive.
I top up with £10 two to three times a year.

Yeah Bruce, I’ve got a small clamshell phone that’s pay as you go, just for when out walking or cycling. It’s just there to make emergency calls or receive calls from just family.
It can be thrown in my rucksack or light enough to stick in my pocket…Unlike my Samsung A36 all singing and dancing device…
I put a tenner on it last year and I’ve only ever made one call on it. I think you have to use it at least once every six months or they will cancel the number.

I used to have a backup phone too, I put $10 a year on it. It’s purpose was purely for overseas visitors, when they visited I would then put unlimited calls and text for a month which, when that expired, returned to its $10 a year status.
These days my visitors are few and far between (we are getting far too old for international flights) so I no longer have a “backup phone” though I could probably resurrect a phone from my drawer of old phones if necessary.
BTW it will be interesting on my upcoming trip because my daughter has Starlink at home and it comes with a free Starlink Mini for travelling. I hope that by the time we set off she has it set up on her van so I can connect my phone and computer to it no matter where we are.
If that is the case then I can use Whatsapp to call anyone anywhere in the world (that’s the theory anyway)

As late addition to the above post, I have been messing about in the car this morning and discovered an old “backup phone” in my case of useful travelling things, it was turned off and the battery was down to 20% so it is on charge at the moment so it can return to its silent emergency duties (no SIM card).

I’ve just changed mine to 125GB at £13 a month, but it goes up every April by £2.50 (24 month contract).
I think mid-contract hikes should be illegal!

I agree Azz, my contract with Vodafone was £7.50 every year ever since I can remember and then suddenly about three years ago it started going up every year. It’s now a tenner a month.

No employee. As for the mobile network, I’ve been benefitting from a customer retention and recruitment scheme that my email provider GMX set up two years ago in cooperation with Vodafone. It includes an all-net phone flat rate, and free internet access is based on three conditions: You need to have a smartphone with eSIM, use the GMX app on your phone and open it once a day, and accept that free internet access is limited to three GB a month. That’s tailored to my needs since I use the app anyway and have never used more than one GB a month. If I do need more than three GB, I could either book additional data packages in steps of one GB at a ridiculously low rate or accept that internet access gets slowed down until the end of the month.
The biggest German internet provider is German Telecom which I’ve been a customer of for 25 years at least. I use it for streaming TV and films at home. The price is a bit on the high side (41 quid/month) but the service is good.

Sounds like a very good deal Dachs. I only use the same internet access on the smartphone as you, perhaps even less as I use the house wifi when I’m at home, and very rarely use my smartphone while out and about. Just the odd call or text.
Signal strength is rubbish here since they changed over to 5G…
