I usually buy this one too, £4.99 in Lidl.
I never buy EVVO that’s in plastic bottles or that isn’t 100%pure.
All olive says Extra Virgin, but are we being misled?
Ai says:
How to Spot Genuine Extra Virgin Olive Oil
-
Check the Harvest Date: Look for an explicit harvest or pressing date rather than just a best-before date, ensuring it is within 12 to 18 months of production. [1, 2]
-
Inspect the Packaging: Choose dark glass bottles or opaque metal tins that block UV light; avoid clear plastic or glass containers. [1]
-
Look for Certifications: Seek recognized regional seals or independent testing marks, such as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) or local trade council verifications. [1, 2]

How do you find the quality guys? I’ve gone off the main brands tbh, the quality seems to have gone down the pan ![]()
I’ve just ordered one of these as it’s on an introductory offer:
https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-extra-virgin-olive-oil/951949-1-2
I used to buy the 1L bottle for £3.95 before the pandemic!! And it used to be excellent, but I’ve had bottles in the last year or so which have clearly been cut with some cheap oil - if this is the same it’s going right back.
How much were those David? And are they any good?
Never bought Olive Oil, such is life.
I used to buy sainsbury’s organic extra virgin olive oil with the cloudy bits.
There was quite a good one I bought from one of these wholesale food distributors that was selling food during Covid. It was called Lefktro -back in 2020 it cost £24.80 for 5 litres. Now selling at £54! I found it on one site for £29.99 but with £7.50 delivery. You couldn’t buy a smaller bottle during covid so it lasted a few years. Far better than bertoli.
I find the quality fine, use it for cooking and drizzle over salads etc.
You’ll have to wait until Sunday, we’ll be up at our favourite deli buying some more.
Are they any good? I’m no connoisseur. And to appreciate the high end stuff you have to drink it neat: a thing I don’t do. I remember Mrs d00d taking me to Portugal back in the 80s, going to tascas being given steamed fish with boiled potatoes swimming in olive oil. That’s the way to appreciate it, but we don’t do it nowadays.
Oliveira da Serra is widely considered a very good, high-quality olive oil. Produced in Portugal’s Alentejo region, it is an internationally awarded brand known for its balanced flavor profiles, freshness, and sustainable production methods.
Good but there is better, Mrs d00d says.
EDIT I have found a bill from April, says Oliveira da Serra was then £10.25/ 750ml.
To be honest I don’t think there’s a big difference when you’re using these oils for cooking or eating except for flavour. Anything cold pressed olive is better than the regular refined olive or seed oils.
It’s flavour that suffers with the more blended ones like Bertoli. Bertoli isn’t sold as blended but as premium pricing so that’s the main issue I have. I’ve been tempted to buy the Aldi extra virgin oil as that consistently has high reviews and is certified authentic. The Lefktro oil I bought during covid had a great flavour but only available online.
I bought a very expensive oil - Franci Bio, which was meant to have all the poly what’s it’s, I can’t say I felt very well after it. it’s more about personal taste and if it makes you feel good.
You can end up overdosing on supposedly healthy things but find that they are not perfect after doing a bit of research.
It’s shite in tea! ![]()

Doesn’t mix well with Special Brew.
I’m not too fussed about using the refined olive oils for everyday use in the kitchen, it has a higher smoke point than extra virgin olive oil.
Even though I live in a country which is third on the list of world highest olive oil production nations, I still have to be careful when buying from stores, reading the labels attentively.
When I don’t manage to get a good harvest and produce our own (fingers crossed for this coming season), I also like to buy directly from the olive mill from a nearby village to be sure of what I’m buying. Last year the cost was 12euro per litre, probably gone up this year.
The ones we find in stores are either Italian or EU/outside EU without being specified. The Italian ones are the most expensive ones.
ooh that must be wonderful!
I bought a dark glass bottle of Fillipo Berio EVVO in Tesco this morning.
It was £7 for 750 mils with the clubcard. Good value I think.
I buy Tesco olive oil - i also have Fry Light, which is olive oil in a spray bottle
I paid just under £8.00 for a litre on Amazon Helen
Yes, but very, very hard work, it used to be me and my husband taking care of it, now I need to pay someone to harvest but he’s a village friend and offers a good price and worth it in the long run.
I do.
“Such is Life”
It’s delivered by a 6’6" 18-stone Tattooed Geezer.
I’ve asked him. Where’s the Extra Virgin?
Apparently, you only get 7 of those.
When you’ve
Snuffed It. ![]()
