Monkey Is Frozen Solid and Revived To Prove Theory

Los Angeles. Aug 12 1935
Jekal. a Javanese monkey frozen solid in an icebox for five days, was revived recently by Dr. Ralph Willard.
A group of newspapermen witnessed the revival.
The monkey gasped, turned over and then accepted an apple Dr. Willard offered him.
Jekal was frozen solid, Dr. Willard said, In the interest of science.
He then was thawed out and presented for preview.
The physician hopes to prove that by such treatment certain diseases may be cured.
He has no intention of trying his “freezing" experiment on human beings at present, but I eventually hopes to do so.
Jekal’s case history Is brief. He came to Dr Willard as a tubercular monkey.
Dr. Willard shot him full of sodium citrate to prevent his blood from coagulating, gave him ether and put him In the ice-box.
From that time until removed he was frozen solid. Dr Willard said. Then he decided to bring Jekal back to life.
He began warming him gradually. I gave him a blood transfusion and shots of adrenalin chloride to stimulate him.
Jekal responded. A bit droopy, he was. nevertheless, quite alive when he took the apple.
Dr Willard, formerly a student at Columbia university in New York has long been working toward the experiments he now is carrying on.
Jekal, he said, is the result of, many years of work. I experienced many difficulties In trying to find my secret. Early experiments ended In deaths for my animals. The blood would coagulate and I could not restore life.
Sodium citrate, he claimed, solved his problem.
Put Into the blood stream it destroyed a certain chemical In the blood—flbrogen.
Destruction of flbrogen. he said, stopped coagulation.
Dr Willard’s initial experiments here were with guinea pigs.
At present he has on Ice another Javanese monkey, Gaston. He wants to bring Gaston back to life after keeping him frozen for 10 days.
He wants to keep on extending the time he keeps the animals on ice.
A third monkey. Matilda, was frozen with Jekal and Gaston but Matildas case history was not a happy one.
She promptly turned blue and died while being frozen.
Dr Willard explained that “I froze her too fast.” He prophesied that Jekal would be entirely normal In 24 hours. The guinea pigs he previously used returned to normal 24 hours after being revived, he said.
“Did you consider Jekal to be dead when he was frozen?” Dr Willard was asked. "He was dead, absolutely dead,” was the answer. “I brought him back to life.”
