I could understand fines on companies such as this if, after legal fees, the money was used to clear up the mess and/or upgrade. This presumably would cost more than if the company had done the work in the first place, so the fines would/should reflect this, and then the directors can explain to their own shareholders why the dividends are thus lower than they could have been.

levied, ( ÂŁ90,000,000 in one case ) that sounds pretty appropriate to me ??
It remains to be seen if they were or are going to be payed !!
I suppose being private they can always declare bankrupcy like most
other crooks ??

In respect of what happens to the fines the Treasury snaffle it, never to be seen again.

Yes, 90 million clearly doesnât hurt enough to stop them doing it
They just pay the fine because itâs cheaper for them to dump the sewage and pay the fine than to invest in improvements that mean they donât dump the dump the sewage
The problem with using the fine money to repair the damage done would mean it takes the responsibility off the water companies to pay to clear up their mess
The same with upgrading
The fine is supposed to be a punishment encouraging them to do the right thing for fear of reduced profits. Why should it be given back to them to clear up their mess or upgrade?
They should be both fined an amount that will make their shareholders wince at loss of dividends and made to clear up their mess and upgrade to stop it happening again under threat of losing their licence or permission to trade here

Yes, thatâs it in a nutshell
These are not âthe EUsâ companies
They are private companies running our water and sewage systems, for a profit. Some, but not all, of them may be based in EU countries but they donât belong to the EU
Since Brexit, making them conform to environmental standards in our country is the responsibility of the U.K. government. Thatâs what the Brexiteers wanted, wasnât it?
And any country who suffers because of our governments lack of will to do that, is entitled to sue

News on the sewage fiasco!!
UK announced a ÂŁ25 Billion " investment" in infrastructure to tackle sewage
spills !! I await further clarity on this, but it looks as if uk taxpayers are about
to bail out EU shareholders ??
If so why should this be ?? WTF!!

Found some more on the sewage investmet !
It seems that this a longstanding agreement between government
and sewage companies over 25 yrs,We are currently in the fifth
year, the amount invested is ÂŁ56 billion and it comes from the
shareholders of the companies!
It seems they have agreed to move the programne forward
by putting ÂŁ25 billion into work right now due to the urgency
of the situation, so no taxpayer funds needed !!
So we should see some action taking place in the hotspots
pretty soon??
Someone must have had a guilty conscience ??
Remains to be seen if work starts and then continues??

The UK water companies, largely owned by overseas investors but not EU companies, have noted that when the UK left the EU they were no longer required to adhere to EU regulations on water and waste quality. So they could happily pollute rivers and seas with no penalties.
This is a real Brexit benefit. Not.
When you hear this government talking about removing EU rules and regulations what they mean is allowing their friends in such companies to do as they please. Nothing to do with benefiting ordinary people.

The new agreement is a total con by the government.
It is just a rehash of the existing unenforceable agreement and everyone has an extra ÂŁ1 a month on the bill to pay for it.

All they have done is to repeat their initial pledge when they signed the
contract, there is no new money from the investors !!
