The song itself originated in 1909 as a Yale University drinking song, titled “Gentlemen-Rankers,” based on a poem about longing for lost youth.
Origin, Written in 1909 for a Yale University singing group, it references “Mory’s,” a private Yale dining club, and was inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s poem “Gentleman-Rankers”.
Name Origin, The name “Whiffenpoof” came from a mythical, joke dragonfish, suggested by member Denton “Goat” Fowler.
