The song itself originated in 1909 as a Yale University drinking song, titled “Gentlemen-Rankers,” based on a poem about longing for lost youth.
Origin, Written in 1909 for a Yale University singing group, it references “Mory’s,” a private Yale dining club, and was inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s poem “Gentleman-Rankers”.
Name Origin, The name “Whiffenpoof” came from a mythical, joke dragonfish, suggested by member Denton “Goat” Fowler.
Meaning, The song is often considered a nostalgic anthem for students, famously focusing on the “little black sheep who have gone astray”.

Thanks Bret, one would be forgiven for thinking it was something to do with sniffing farts
