The Pages of Punch

I think it’s a little more complicated than that. He was married twice!

1961: ‘Thanking’ the hostess

Anton clearly feels at home with these ‘black tie’ events. The speaker is addressing her husband who is only thinking of the hostess. Looking carefully at the scene I am not sure that she is at all keen on this display.

Impossibly small feet and impossibly high heels again.

There will now be an interval of about a week after which normal service will return.

If you are going on holiday…have a good one

Yes, we are and thank you.

Normal service has now been resumed.

1961: The dogs or the biscuits?

Her dogs certainly are assorted. Anton is showing many breeds. We can’t see if the customer has small feet because the dogs are in the way.

Welcome back Mr. M - I’ve missed your posts.

I’m intrigued as to what the Dogs Stripped notice in the cartoon means.

Google shows innumerable offers for devices for ‘stripping’ dogs. It is simply a grooming tool to remove untidy excess fur. I don’t know why they call it stripping.

1948: An uncomfortable discovery

This is (I understand) every woman’s worst nightmare. Having taken the trouble to dress in a distinctive style they are both appalled at this discovery. The hostess seems quite unconcerned.

The choice of footwear remains the same. The hostess is far too old for these impossibly high heels.

Sorry. I made a mistake.

?

I was trying something out - ahead of ‘publication’. Instead of pressing the ‘preview post’ button I had accidentally pressed the ‘submit reply’ button.

No, my apologies. I should have realised. Mr Gumbum will no doubt tell me I’m an idiot, and I can’t disagree with him!

1947: Post War Housing shortage

Many shortages were experienced after the war ended. Bombing had reduced the number of houses available. New families meant a bigger demand. Here Anton illustrates this problem with typical exaggeration. Small feet again but the house occupier’s heels are not as extreme as the hostess in yesterday’s picture.

1955 : Thelwell in all its glory

Portraying little girls and their ponies is Thelwell’s main claim to fame. Here is the first of two cartoons on this theme.

1955: More Thelwell

This is part two of yesterday’s cartoon.

1949: Aero dynamics

Hardly likely to happen but the picture does possess some innocent charm. The garment industry knows how to prevent this ever happening.

1956: Routine

He is a hospital and some repairs are taking place ‘underneath’. The patient is obviously wondering whether it is the bed or himself that is being repaired.

It was probably one of those knitted ones

Knitted swimwear? Good grief - that must have been itchy and uncomfortable - not to mention unpredictable when wet!
