The Pages of Punch

How times have changed

1957: It worked!

It was so irresistible that yesterday’s sales lady no longer needs to work there.

1953: Chutzpah

True to his emphasis on motoring Brockbank shows an example of extreme cheek. Having knocked him off his bicycle she is only interested in her needs.

1953: A new use for the doublet

A fanciful look at a Sixteenth Century fashion item which would hardly be waterproof.

1957: A brilliant future

That was a time when many predictions were being made about a wonderful future of plenty and not much need for working. This cartoon reflects all that without any hint of cynicism. How different from now!

Sorry

I have come upon a snag that I don’t have time just now to sort out.

My jpg files all of a sudden are not regarded as valid. I hope to sort this out later today.

Could this be related to the changes made to this site last night? It was transferred to a new server. Perhaps ask Azz.

It’s happening to a lot of us. I hope it gets sorted soon as well.
Your Punch cartoons are super, Mr Magoo. Not seen this thread before.

I love this one, Thelwell was brilliant. I’ve got a collection of Thelwell books & memorabilia. Including the Chiltern figures of Penelope & Kipper.

The site is working properly for me, although I haven’t tried posting pictures yet.

The forum is working fine, it’s posting pics that is a problem.

Hi Mr Magoo  I have done a test and can’t load attachments from my PC neither can I add Pictures to my album .
I have left a message for Admin .

Meg, you are a star.:023:

I am now not allowed to send a message to Admin.

It’s ok Mr Magoo, it’s been sorted & working now.

Thank you, Tiffany.

1953: Rubbish on TV

Punch was noticeably hostile to TV as well it might. Entertainment at the flick of a switch was an obvious competitor to the magazine. The programme must have been really dire if homework was preferred.

School uniforms were still very traditional. I suppose the big change occurred in the 60s.

I chuckled at that one.

We had a telly a bit like that, with doors on the front. I suppose at that time the preference was for nice looking furniture rather than a screen that was always on!

I remember we had a telly like that too…very posh:)

Those kids must have been watching children’s hour, remember that?

Was it 4 to 5pm or 5 till 6pm? Can’t remember but they showed Blue Peter Magpie all that stuff. There doesn’t seem to be a Children’s hour now
