1935: A very Gentle Scenario
There is no hint of satire in this cartoon.

1936: Damage Limitation
The motorist is anxious to make amends but his wife is keen to dissuade him.
Had to save that one.
You have someone in mind, don’t you?
1936: Night clubs breaking the law
In novels of the time frequent reference is made to establishments being raided by the police. The problem usually concerned the licensing laws. Evelyn Waugh comes to mind. The young woman is trying to reassure her mother. After all, if she was going to spend the night in a police station cell then she can’t come to any harm.
1936: Life among the intellectuals
Today’s young people would find it difficult to grasp the hold that Communism held over their equivalents 80 or so years ago. The three people present in this cartoon are wearing the correct clothes for their time. What is the point about Marx? Surely to point out that his writings are so well established among the adults that only the children need to learn them.
Either that or the senior member in that group considers the works of Marx not to be serious or akin to children’s fairy stories.
Not too likely considering how the way they are clothed.
1936: Picnics no longer welcome
Throwing bread at swans is not mentioned in the Communist Manifesto.
The precursor to today’s Guardianistas and champagne socialists?
Yes. That is exactly what they were. The actual clothes have, of course, changed completely. So has this blind faith in full-on Communism as practiced in the Soviet Union.
Well… I’d say there are still ‘blind faith’ communists about, and not a million miles from here!
1936: Treating the telephone as a person
Since madam chooses to treat the telephone as a person he feels obliged to follow suit.
1936: Imagining the story
The lady ‘lives’ through all the horrendous things she is reading. There is even an imaginary body under her bed.
All those EU bogeymen creeping up on her.
1936: A successful gambling strategy?
She hasn’t really understood.
1936: A woman’s perspective
She probably has never worked for a salary. She is only interested in spending money – acquiring isn’t her responsibility.
Political Correctness hadn’t been discovered in 1936.
1936: Early version of the mini
When the mini was launched in the early 1960s people used to make jokes of this kind. It seems they weren’t the first. It obviously is just a joke. You couldn’t really drive a car as small as this. Again how could she have got it into the bath?
1936: What makes a good umpire?
I am under the impression that this related to a practice that has stopped a long time ago. With all the media attention surplus pullovers are no longer worn by the umpire.
1936: Hardly reassuring
Not the best way to convey the message.
