The Pages of Punch

1983: Art Gallery Attendant

This cartoon is the unmistakable work of Larry who always showed men well past their youth.

1982: Two kinds of Power Cuts

No electricity is one kind of power cut. Losing an executive positon is the other one. Gerald has not expected this.

1982: Exit via dustbin

It’s a dramatic gesture but it won’t really work. Too many people who won’t let it happen.

1984: Giant worms

Reversing the normal size difference between birds and worms create this fictitious confrontation. Some similar situations sometimes occur in real life.

1982: Personnel Department in Heaven

In medieval times life in heaven was imagined as much the same as on earth. Here a personnel manager has seamlessly transmogrified into his new angelic role.

1987: Owner and Cat

Some dog owners are said to resemble their pets. Here a cat owner sports whiskers and is shown together with the animal. Quite amusing in its way.

1982: Life among the dinosaurs

Joking about the Jurassic period – eating - has my vote. Of course, some of the monsters were vegetarians. They roamed this planet for more than 165 million years. Our presence is a mere trifle in comparison.

1982: Interpersonal relationships in the office

Surely, she is being over sensitive in this instance but genuine cases of harassment did, and still do, occur.

Some using the same justification I shouldn’t wonder.

1981: Making a statement

This joke (with minor variations) come up quite often.

1982: Misuse of Police Resources

This sort of thing still happens occasionally. The tabloids love thus kind of story.

Indeed. The problem with our police today is to be found at the top.

1982: Ashamed

He doesn’t want the other people to know that his luggage is badly battered.

Made me smile Mr Magoo…I keep meaning to get new luggage

1982: Nude hitch hiker

This cartoon belongs to the ‘let all hang out’ era which started in the 1960s. During most of Punch’s history such a cartoon would have been unthinkable. It is also a portent of its final demise.

1982: Lord Lucan in his heyday

Long forgotten now, the fascination with the disappeared Lord Lucan was once intense, with ‘sightings’ reported regularly. He is now officially dead.

1991: Nursery Rhyme meets Market Forces

In the story the old woman who lived in a shoe didn’t know what to do. In the modern version she knows exactly what she can do – trade up to a wellington boot! That way her many children can each have a room of their own. The estate agent brings a touch of commercial reality to the story.

I wonder how athlete’s foot would show up in the living accommodation? Perhaps this question introduces too much reality.

1982: Misfit in the Nudist club

The figures in the background indicate that the scene is a nudist club. Harry isn’t happy with stripping off in public, so he keeps his shorts on. His companion clearly wants to get brown completely all over. He isn’t happy with her wish. I suppose that she is offering to put on her bikini to please him. I do wonder why he agreed to come here in the first place.

This is another cartoon which could not have appeared any time in almost all of Punch’s previous existence.

1991: UFOs again

Little green men also need to pass their driving test, or is it a pilot’s license? The driving lesson has to be here on earth and will make mysterious hollows on the countryside.
