The Pages of Punch

1983: Sarcasm in the office

Information explosion isn’t popular these days as an expression. Modern equivalents could be ‘the information age’ or just ‘the internet’.

1980: Rupert Bear meets his match

We are not expected to admire the old hunter. He is surrounded by the animals he has killed both real and fictional. Rupert Bear is not that well known these days. But in his time, he was a popular figure in children’s books.

All that hunter needs now is Paddington and Pooh, and he’ll have the full set! :mrgreen:

Don’t forget Bungle from Rainbow. :smiley:

1980: In a different time zone…

This is one of many Punch jokes which insert modern facts into an earlier time scene. It is difficult to imagine how a knocking sound could really have occurred as shown.

Haha! It took me a moment to notice the cause! Clever.

You noticed! Well done!

:lol: :lol:
Dot and carry!

The 18th Century equivalent of the slow puncture! :lol:

1981: The curse of Tutankhamun

Here we see a little play on facts. The idea of a curse on intruders of the pyramid is linked with the rather young age of the dead Tutankhamun.

1981: Appropriate terminology

Not a likely scenario.

:lol::lol::lol:

I might try that if ever I am up in court!

I tell you what would work wiv the yoof of today…if they were asked to swear on the loss of their mobile phone!:lol:

:lol::lol::lol:

1981: A literal raid

A fanciful interpretation.

That’s wear a triffid would come in useful.

1981: A reason to rejoice?

Its not much of an advantage.

Blasted spellchecker! Only just noticed! :-(:-(:frowning:

1980: Not the most appropriate name

We’ve all seen some absurd names in our time.

Not a very appropriate choice either. Who would shelter under a tree in a thunderstorm?

1981: Space intruders at work

Here is another instance of extra terrestrials (ET) at work. The cartoon accurately mirrors the widespread interest in this subject at that time.
