The Pages of Punch

1977: Kids returning

I was not aware of any such trend in 1977 but the cartoonist clearly was. Today it has much more to do with the prohibitive cost of accommodation.

Wow! Plus ça change!

Hope all is well with you Mr. M?

Hear hear.

Thank you for your concern. Yesterday things looked rather bad on the medical front but today is looking much better.

1977: Church vestments

Elaborate vestments are no longer as fashionable as they used to be…

Sorry you had a bad day yesterday, Mr. Magoo, :frowning: but glad you’re better today.

1978: ‘Where are you darling?’

The man is looking in the wrong direction. This is surely a comment on the then current fashion in textile design.

1975: Bespoke grot

This unsavoury character wants his wallpaper to reflect his personality.

1977: Forty years before its time

It wasn’t called the EU then but it was already attracting adverse comments.

At the time people talked about butter mountains and wine lakes. Both related to excessive stocks of foodstuff.

1977: It does seem a waste

What is the point of all this display if she won’t go along with him?

SORRY - wrong narrative.

It was a senior moment!

Correction will follow. Watch this space.

The correct narrative for today’s cartoon:

1968: Shyness at sea

This is an extreme example of absurd reticence. Impossible to be taken seriously

You are allowed a senior moment every now and then Mr Magoo

1977: The Music scene

Honesty like this was never part of the music scene.

1978: Back to reality

David Langdon’s drawings are always neat and make their point. During the war Landon provided many of the public information posters.

1973: Gender specific grooming

In the afterglow of the Sixties this youngster is learning about cosmetics for females being off the menu for males. How different that is now becoming…

Aww poor little chap :frowning: the ladies boobs are so funny

The boobs are surely there to offset the effect of the clothes that could be those of a man.

1978: A point of view

Entirely true but completely unlikely.

1978: As time goes by…

As we get older the well-remembered things of our youth become ancient in the eyes of the younger generation.

1975: Reading the Signs

The men on the right are trying to judge what the men on the left are up to. Today we tend not to wear clothes that proclaim our opinions.
